My husband's family was here long before the Mayflower. He says they were waving at the passengers as they landed!

Oh you guys made me laugh!

I belong to a Toastmaster's Club and I'll have to try this as the "Joke of the Day." Of course I'll have to practice so I can keep a straight face.

SU -- I didn't know you were a Native American! What tribe was that?
Posted by: NANCYE G on 02/19/16
Actually, two of my children are Choctaw, and one is African American/Japanese, the last Caucasian.

I did say it was DH's family, not mine. They came with an early New England company in the 1500s, but thought it was a brutally cold and uncompromising land. Of course, being in New England in the winter wasn't their best choice for lovely weather...nothing close to the cold weather gear available today. I imagine just the smell of wet wool clothing wold have turned me off!

Not to mention the shrinkage when the wet wool dries.....

SU -- I forgot about your blended family. I know that Choctaws are from Oklahoma. Who greeted the Mayflower?

NANCY...

It is DH's relatives who greeted the Mayfower. They came from England in the 1500s, one of the exploratory New England Companies. They disliked America, simce they arrived in the winter. But more returned later. One of his relatives was from Isle of Wight, Virginia. There were also Pitt family in North Carolina. Oddly enough, the Choctaw did not originate in Oklahoma (Arlo Guthrie "Way down yonder on the Indian nation, Ride my pony on the reservation, In the Oklahoma hills where I was born.."). They were taken on the infamous "Trail of Tears" march by the Army, during which many died from smallpox that was in the blankets supplied by the Army. They were not the only tribe moved from valuable East Coast areas into Oklahoma. I know that the Cherokee were move, too.

DH's relative fought in the American Revolution on our side and was given land in Tennessee for his service. H traded what is now Nashvlle for a horse, brdle an blanket, the idiot. And these descendants of a Lord and Prime Minister of England have been poor ever since.

My family came along much later, some from Germany and Switzerland and England. We were not then, nor ever will be, employees of the Pitt family...
