Confusing pattern
I ordered this pattern about a month ago. I ordered the large size, and paid around $24.00 for it. I have been cross-stitching for about 45 years, and have cross-stitched 12 stockings. As well as many other projects. So I am not a beginner at cross-stitching. But when I received this pattern it was printed on either three or four pages, front and back. I realize this is probably because I ordered the enlarged one. But it's all in black and white with no instructions. I can't even figure where the center point is. For $24.00 plus another $7or $8 for shipping I expected a little more than I got. If I EVER get this mess figured out, I will post how it turned out.

While I recently admitted to being terrorized (by another design) from Heaven and Earth Designs, I must say that I would be awed doing a Christmas stocking by them. Their patterns finish as beautifully as anything I have ever seen. The one you chose is beautiful.

I would suggest that you call Heaven and Earth Designs at 1-888-511-7106. They are in Oregon, so they will be on PST (Pacific Standard Time). Their patterns are usually multipage but many stitchers love them as they are truly lovely. They have a website at heavenandearthdesigns.com
You can see all the patterns there and if you click on "contact us" on their home page, you can send them an email. They have great customer service and can help you or perhaps help ECS to refund your money. I would try to stick with the design. Most of their designs they say to start in the upper left corner, but be sure you leave enough blank fabric outside the design to sew it together as a stocking. I like to leave about 2" around my stockings. And I am the crazy one who is trying to stitch SIX stockings for this Christmas!

The stocking you have chosen is absolutely gorgeous. I did Heaven and Earth's THE LITTLE DRUMMER BOY a few years ago for my great niece. I had the pattern for a few years and have made well over thirty Christmas stockings but put this one aside as I found it quite overwhelming. I ended up photocopying each page (I think there were nine or eleven sheets to the pattern) about 150 percent bigger to start so I could see it better. I gave myself considerably more cloth than needed but thought it was wise, just in case. The pattern was very challenging, to say the least, but so beautiful once it was finished. Their patterns are all beautiful but I don't think I'm up for the challenge of trying another one. I could probably make three "normal" stockings in the time it took to make that one, but well worth it!

I always start my stockings on the top right, leaving about 2" for a right side border. I also leave an extra couple of inches on the left hand side as my frame will allow it. Small price to pay...just in case! It's never been an issue but I feel better wasting a bit than worrying about it. Good luck with that one but I'm sure you will be very happy with it, once you actually get started.

OOPS --- I typed Megan instead of Morgan. Don't know how I managed that. I know that I was thinking Morgan.

So Sorry

I should clarify...I always make my stockings facing the same direction (heel on the right hand side). That way, if there is an addition to the family, the stockings always hang in the same direction. So I always start my stockings on the top right hand side. When I come across patterns I like that point in the opposite direction I photocopy them in mirror image so they are always in the same direction in the end.

What material do you use for the BACK of the stocking when you have finished cross stitching the pattern? Felt?
by: Bermuda on 02/25/16
NEVER! After all that work, it seems such a shame to use something as cheap looking as felt for a backing. I seldom use kits but I know they seem to always include felt, to my annoyance. I have lucked out over the years finding some pretty awesome looking tapestry fabric. I usually buy a couple of meters of it at a time to last me for the next several years then I look again. I'm getting on the low end so will soon have to get out again for a look. The tapestry is a nice weight, combined with two layers of broadcloth for lining the front and back and the stockings hang beautifully.

This is good to know. Thank You toosh...I've never made a Xmas stocking before.... I have a couple of simple patterns but I haven't stitched them yet.
