Country Bench
Although I normally prefer working with 11 count Aida I thought I would give this a try with 14 count and it has been a rough go. I do not like or know how to do half stitches so this piece, pretty as it is, has not been one of my favorites. After this is finished I think I will stick to the 11 count - much easier on the eyes and the nerves!

I think you can use whatever color, material, and size fabric you want with any design. I use 28 count evenweave since the material is softer and it's easier to do half stitches. More counting is involved but I like the way it looks.

You could watch a video on youtube about cross stitching. To make 1/2 cross stitch instead of making an "X" you would make "/", or from the bottom right to top left.

At least one of our stitchers use a regular sewing/embroidery needle to make half and quarter stitches on aida...she states that it eliminates a struggle getting through the fabric. :)

Thanks for the suggestions and since I am fairly new to cross stitching I will check out the video. Appreciate your ideas.

I also hate 1/2 and 1/4 stitches.

Think about trying one more project using 14 ct fabric.

Next time pick a pattern that only has whole stitches. I swear on My holy cross stitch bible it will be a lot easier.

Choose an easy pattern that is on the small side maybe 50 x 50 stitches in size. You might like it better.

Also, most of us stitchers on this board make extra copies of their patterns and put the originals in a safe place to be used again or future reference. I always make my copies at least twice the original size.

I'm one of those who switches to a needle with a sharp point (Embroidery or Crewel) to make fractional stitches when I'm stitching on Aida. If the count is less than 16, I just skip them if the area is back stitched.

P.S. I use a visor called Mag Eyes. You can use it alone or even over glasses. It will open your eyes to stitching over higher count fabric. I'd heard they were really expensive, but you can get them for $30 or less on Amazon.

I only bought them last month, but am using the whenever I stitch.

The first thing I do when I get a new pattern is take it to UPS and have it enlarged and make a couple of copies. I also use the blue marking pen to cross off where I've been working and ad a dot on errant cross stitches until later. The blue markings wash off in water. Love these pens.

I believe Syagel does the sewing needle when she cross stitches like you do Sharon.

I think half stitches are easier than whole stitches.

After being deeply sunk into this hobby for 64 years, I must admit that I really truly disliked half and quarter stitches until last year. Somehow, my brain got it and they are easier, even on aida!
Maybe it is just doing them for all that time or perhaps it is a small.miracle.
