I just went and double checked the item for myself and it's all stamped cross stitch. I think they are letting you know that you will probably need to use a crewel needle to stitch this and it will have to be purchased separately. But the instructions only give instructions for stamped cross stitching and doesn't mention any type of crewel embroidery. Hope this helps :) Thank you.
