Hi Callie,
Many stitchers who have a large pattern that has many sheets to it OR they have a pattern where the center of the pattern is NOT shown, will decide to start their pattern, in the upper left-hand corner of their fabric. How do they determine WHERE to put the first stitch in the upper left corner of the fabric?
First, you need to figure out what size fabric you need for the pattern. There is a calculator here under "Cross Stitch Fabric" in box to your left that has a calculator which you put in the size of the pattern, fabric count (ie. 28-count? 32-count? 14-count?), whether you are going "over 1" or "over 2" and how much EXTRA Fabric you want for mounting and framing (I usually add 3 inches to each side for this). The calculator will be able to tell you how much fabric you need. So lets say that my cross stitch pattern when it is completed will be: 14 inches wide by 14 inches tall and I wanted 3" inches on EACH side for mounting and framing. Therefore, I have to have a piece of fabric that is 20 inches wide (3 inches on each side, remember?) by 20 inches tall. Are you with me?
Because my cross stitch chart does NOT show a center place to start; OR it is a MULTIPLE PAGE Chart where I want to begin my very first stitch on Page 1 at the top LEFT CORNER, I will take a RULER and at the TOP LEFT CORNER OF MY FABRIC, I will measure 3 inches DOWN from the top edge of my FABRIC and make a pencil mark with a pencil on the fabric, then I will measure 3 inches IN from the LEFT TOP edge of my FABRIC. Where those TWO Pencil marks meet is where you put the VERY FIRST CROSS STITCH that is the first cross stitch showing on your pattern on page 1 in the UPPER LEFT CORNER. Because you measured down 3 inches and inward 3 inches to find your starting point, you know you will have the 3 inch border for mounting and framing.
Whenever I begin a project in the upper left corner I; ALWAYS REMEASURE my starting point from the top and side of the fabric to make sure I didn't make a mistake and 2) make sure that I cross stitch the very TOP TWO ROWS of the whole pattern, then stop and look to make sure those two rows are centered on the fabric. That reassures me that I have the design centered. So I wasted my time by stitching all the way across! BUT it's better to find out your centered on the material by stitching those top two rows of your pattern, then to start stitching along other areas and find out later that one side of your fabric has less than the 3 inches for framing and the other side too much.
Hope this helps!
I'm not an employee of Everything Cross Stitch but one of the stitchers that saw your question on this ECS "chat" message board.
