Would 20 x 24 Aida cloth be large enough for this pattern

You didn't say what count, but if it is 14 count Aida, it would be large enough for the design, but maybe not enough framing allowance. 1 1/2 "is not a lot, especially for a large picture. 21 1/2" x 27 1/2" would be ideal.

I agree with Miss Kitty. If you stitch on 14 ct fabric you will have very little wiggle room for finishing. AND, if you got off center (which I frequently do) you would end up with running out of room before running out of pattern. Best Idea is to spend a little more money and finish up with a lovely finished piece.

Using 14 ct aida the 20 x 24 inch piece you have is too small. If you want to purchase a custom cut piece you should buy 22 x 27 inches. Or, you can buy the suggested fabric that is listed on the supply list and cut it down.

Don't take chances - you'll be putting a lot of work into this piece.

I'd buy a piece of fabric the size of a table cloth if I were to stitch this pattern just to be on the safe side. :) Seriously, I had a friend run out of fabric after she had invested a huge amount of time - it was sad to see.

Bigger is ALWAYS better. You can cut fabric down but it's almost impossible to add fabric if you find out, usually after the fact, that it's too small. Always over-estimate. It may be a little more expensive but worth it in the long run.

I agree with the previous posts. Bigger is always better. I always add a minimum of 6 inches to the finished size of the width and height when ordering a piece of fabric you can always cut it back. I fold all the extra up and pin with my large quilting pins while I am stitching so it doesn't get in my way.
