Just Saved A Snake :)
I was walking the dogs just now and saw a pretty rat snake, about 3 1/2 to 4 foot long, crossing the road to the apartments behind me. Now knowing how ignorant people can be about serpents I rushed over and kept pushing it with my foot trying to get it to hurry across. Both me and my dogs are now in the danged street!

It was almost to the other side, only 2 more feet, when the danged thing coiled up in defense! Then I started gently smacking it in the face with the poop bag growling at it to 'hurry up and get across, stupid!!' It finally turned and made its way off the road and into the creek below. I hollered after it 'Now stay off the roads and don't go into anybody's yard!'

That's the first snake I've seen here and I sure didn't want to see it squished!!!!

Hmm, there doesn't seem to be very many cross stitch patterns for snakes :(

I wonder why? I can't imagine snakes being very popular.

Dancy, you should be more cautious. Even the bite of a non-venomous snake can be very painful and dangerous. Infection from bacteria, etc.

That would have been one squished snake if it had been up to me. I hate them.

I am not afraid of snakes unless they are poisonous. I usually say "live and let live".

I noticed a lack of snake patterns, but find no rat patterns. My daughter and my granddaughter both raised rats. I can attest to all the cute mouse patterns, but no.cute rats. That is fine for me...I hated rats after the DD let hers eat my curtains in the parlor of our Victorian.

Su, you are a much, much better woman than I am. There is no way that I could share my living space with a rodent! I draw the line at cats and dogs.
I also believe in live and let live, however, I also believe that we should respect each other's territory. I cannot look at worms because they remind me of snakes. I'm a big city girl, sorry. )
DH just brought in the mail and my Tacky Bob bead holder arrived. What a neat little item to make our hobby easier. Thanks, VCESS.

YW, Tex! Love it when gadgets actually turn out to be useful!

I don't care for snakes, but because of some neighbors in Shreveport, I got sort of used to them...sort of. They had a pet boa who absolutely loved my voice...darn thing would meet me at the door, follow me through the house! Occasionally, it would escape its "house" and disappear and they got the bright idea to invite us down for a game of cards...the silly thing always came out to say "hello". But I didn't realize I was the snake finder till I got a call at midnight to please come down and talk...the DH hurt something he laughed so hard. The snake was down the washer drain...just the tip of his tail hooked over the top...next to the hose.

Ten years later my DD heard my MIL relating this tale to some pals of theirs and promptly started a campaign to get me to the zoo...specifically our state of the art reptile house...she wanted a first-hand demonstration. Sure enough, we stood next to the boas, and I was telling her about Mike's boa--my version...and here comes the boa. Still gives me the creeps...but gave my DD a whole new topic for "sharing time". :)

I grew up in the mountains of Oklahoma, snakes all over:) I've been bitten a few times but only from the non-venomous ones (because me and my siblings were messing with them. They're fun! And we let them go afterwards) but the reason I didn't pick this one up was I didn't want to stress it any further. I just wanted it to get out of the road before some nut killed it! Snakes are very important animals in the ecosystem!

I may do some fiddling around on my paintshop program and see if I can't come up with a snakey design. I did a rat design some years back, I'll see if I can find it again. A friend had rats and she wanted a pic with a Celtic twist so I drew two rats and their tails were like the Celtic scroll deign:) Turned out ok.

Two things you need to know before I tell my snake story. #1....We lived in what was called a raised ranch. Part of the foundation of our house was above ground and we used part of the basement as a garage. Because of this we had steps from our driveway to our front yard.....garage on the side. #2....our next door neighbor was disabled and hardly ever came out onto their beautiful porch in the five or so years they lived there. Well I came home one afternoon from work, got our of my car and walked up the steps and there on the top step was a snake. Now I've always heard that stupid saying "they're more afraid of you than you are of them" so I took my purse and used it to try to make the snake move. Nope that snake would not have any part of it and coiled up and looked like it was going to attack. The most reasonable thing for me to do was to either back down the steps or turn around and run down the steps. Not me!.....I stepped off the steps onto the embankment, lost my balance, fell and rolled down the embankment....you know like we use to do as kids......and ended up in the drive way. My first reaction was to lie there quietly to make sure no one saw anything. As my luck was my neighbor chose that day to sit on the porch!! He yelled over "Are you ok? Did you hurt yourself?" I laid there and started laughing!! Then he yelled "DO you need help? Should I come over to help you?' I quickly got up and told him I was just fine but I don't think he believed me because I was laughing so hard I was was doubled over!!! That was my last meeting with a snake and I do everything I possibly can to avoid them!!!! PS......I swear I heard that snake laughing!!!!!

VCESS, this is the strangest and funniest thing that I have yet to hear! You really need to write your experiences down. I spent almost 3 years in Monroe, LA (frequently went to Barksdale AFB) but was lucky enough to never see a snake. I stayed away from bayous, ditches, etc. There was a big bayou next to the campus or on it and horror stories about snakes were told. They give me the creeps. I know very little about them but thought that they hear with their tongues. Have to ask GD. She knows everything about animals. I'm surprised that you aren't being called "The Snake Whisperer". That boa could would have remained in the pipe forever more had it been up to me. You are a good woman indeed. Your kids must be proud to have such a renaissance woman for a mother! LOL

micho, I am sure that the snake was laughing. That's the kind of creatures they are. You left out the most important part - was the snake gone by the time you were trying to re-enter your home?

The old man on the porch when you had your unfortunate tumble sounds like classic Murphy's law.

Su where are you and how did the dental visit go?

Texas Stitcher,

No the snake was still on the step. I finally yelled for my husband to come out and take care of him. My husband just told me to walk down the driveway and across the front yard to get into the house but it was "casual Friday" at work that day and I had on sandals.....dressy flip-flop type.....and when I rolled down the hill they went flying. The one was in the driveway a few feet from me and the other one was on the top step by the snake. I'm pretty sure after she/he stopped laughing she/he was trying it on!! But by the time my husband finally came outside the snake had taken off through the grass and into a stone row....the property was once a farm..... between our property and the one next door. We're in South Dakota right now. The weather here has been hot but at least not humid like in Texas. Will be going to Pennsylvania to visit family and friends in a couple of weeks.
