How cute. Three options, you can do extra clean work - that's what I try to do - with more or less success. You can iron on fusible backing or hand stitch a piece of thin fabric over the motif.
I'm sure that there are much more efficient and elegant ways. Hopefully some of our stitcher friends will offer solutions.
