We are heading South !!
I have been keeping a "low Profile" because it has been hotter than (as my grandmother used to say) the hinges of Hell!! For the last 14 days we have had temperatures well above 90 degrees with the humidity around 94 percent. There goes any wish I ever had of moving to Florida!!! We are leaving Monday morning for Cass, WV. We have made reservations to take a ride on one of the steam trains.
It is a ride 2 1/2 hours each way from Cass up to Bald Knob which is the highest point in West Virginia. We haven't taken this ride for probably 7 or 8 years. I had to laugh....when we made the reservations on line....they advised us to "bring a fall jacket". I do remember the last time we rode....we got to the station and it was 60 degrees at 9:00 in the morning (in the mountains). We were freezing and bought
a jacket at the General Store!! Will let all of you know how everything went!! If you have never made a trip to Cass, it is a wonderful experience. They have their own website if you want to check out everything!! Be safe my friends.....and most important of all......take GOOD care of yourselves!!

P.S. The picture I am attaching shows a water tower....we actually stop and "take on" water for our five hour trip!! You have your choice of riding in an "enclosed" car or an open sided car with a "roof". We chose the open sided car because the "smells" are just outstanding!!!!!!!

Have been on Cass and have had a WONDERFUL time! There are several other RR in the area that are great, but not as much fun as Cass. Are you and DH RR junkies like we are? Have fun! Linda

Thank you!! Linda, yes....we are RR buffs. About five years ago we went to Elkins, WVA and did the day long trip into the mountains and back....it was just spectacular! I grew up in the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia. When I was young.....the Railroad was a big part of all of our lives!! We have watched some of the RR "trip" specials that they run on PBS. Some of the ones out West look just great. My husband also wants to take one of those trips!!

jersey, good for you. I would have also chosen the open car. 60 sounds heavenly. I learned from a friend our temps are supposed to reach between 107 and 110 this coming week (with heat index).

I mentioned rail travel to DD some time ago. I thought it would be nice to just ride and see the country but she totally dispelled the notion and immediately informed me that this would not be the Orient Express. I have to do more research because I love train travel. Fond memories from my childhood.

Enjoy yourselves and be safe.

Your journey sounds heavenly JC. I have a mobility scooter (had a vicious illness last year that attacked my muscles so had to learn to walk again but am pretty good now) and am just learning to tune in to the wonderful smells that nature gives us...something all you car people really miss out on ha ha.

Your mentioning the dimensions that these smells will add to your experience on your journey was music to my ears. You must tell us more please.

The temperatures that you are all citing are gobsmacking. We use centigrade here in Europe but anything over the 70's (23 degrees) and I start to moan....not that it happens very often.

I wish you a fascinating bouquet of nature's perfumes.🙂

Texas,
Your DD is right about train travel not being the Orient Express. Will let you know of the "adventure" DH and I had with our train trip on Amtrak from Ohio to California about 4 years ago...UGH!!!

Jerseycrafter - Have you ridden the Smoky Mt. RR? The trip from Bryson City through the Nantahala Gorge is
great.

As for Amtrak, I have ridden,it quite a few times from Cleveland to N.Y. city and the Acela through the northeast corridor. I have really enjoyed it. That was when I was by myself. Traveling with disabled husband was not as easy. To travel Amtrak, you have to have patience as it is rarely on time, but if you are not on a tight schedule it's great. I realize that some folks have had bad experiences, but it can be a fun way to travel. linda

Thank you folks....everything is packed and "loaded". We intend to leave about 8:00 AM...that will bring us to the famous "Baltimore Beltway" around 9:30 or so...Traffic is usually lighter at that time, of course, this is "peak" vacation time....we shall see!! Will let you know when we return how it all went! I hope things cool off for many of you. Please be safe...and take care of yourselves. They are now constantly describing our humidity in South Jersey as "tropical"!!?? LOL

Thanks, Bermuda. I guess I'll listen to her. Nothing would be worse than for us to get on Amtrak and two stops into it we'd realize what a mistake it all was - with 3000 miles to go! Hahaha!
I was all traveled out for many years but all of a sudden would like to see the New England fall foliage and visit Quebec and Montreal. It is too far to drive, it would take six months one way and we are not too fond of air travel any longer. So I had this bright idea but air travel it will have to be.

jersey, that is too funny - tropical! At least the local residents can stay put and save tons of cash by no longer having to travel to tropical locations.

Done the Baltimore route many, many times. That was back in the early seventies and early nineties not as much traffic I'm sure.

Be safe and keep us posted.
