Headed down to Georgetown today....
Would you believe that I drove one hour south to Georgetown area to purchase some dwarf "Mexican Petunia" plants that I've been unable to find anywhere closer? I think I'm as addicted to the plants as I am to cross stitching.. told DH "these beautiful little plants followed me home"....

Bermuda,
I looked up the picture of the flowers and they are beautiful. I'd love to have them around the lamp post next summer since they like the sun. Wonder if the deer would eat them?

maubennett,
I looked on the internet for more information and here is what I came up with regarding the
Mexican petunia. Keep in mind there are TWO sizes: regular size get up to 3 foot tall and the DWARF size, which is the size I bought. They are perennials, so once you plant them they will come back every year. They self-sow their seeds, so put them where you can keep an eye on them because the plants will spread. They come in purple, white and pink. They need FULL SUN or PARTIAL SUN. The plant will hardly flower and will get spindley if planted in full shade. They need regular watering like many other plants do, I have two white and two purple and told the nursery woman that I was interested in getting 2-4 pink ones as well. She was out of the pink. Also, when looking at the buds on the plant it is difficult to discern whether the plant's flower is going to be purple, white or pink because she had her plants scattered and none of the flowers were open. I'm sure other nurseries who carry them will have the plants labeled a bit better. She told me that I can "divide" them YEARLY to get more plants, so I won't buy too many. I paid $7.00 per plant.
According to the articles I read, the plants are deer RESISTANT! I suppose that means deer won't necessarily feed on them, but of course there are no garantees! Articles say the butterflies and hummers like them.
The plant's name is: Dwarf Ruellia Brittoniana
One article states the DWARF Mexican Petunia will get to be about 6-8 inches high and 12-15 inches wide. I planted two purple flowered ones about 3 weeks ago (in full sun) and spaced them apart as a edging border plant and I just love them so far; love the combination of flowers with the plant's attractive green "blade-shaped" leaves. Check out some pictures on the internet of the plant when you get a chance. :)

OHHH...also says these plants can be very aggressive and hard to get rid of, sooo look for some dwarf
cultivars named "Mayan Purple" or "Mayan White" that are sterile hybrids that don't get the seeds that can start "baby' Mexican Petunias all over the place!!!

Bermuda, Thank you so much for all the info. I've written it down and will look for them next year since it is too late here to find petunias. I also love to read all of the tips and help you give to other stitchers.
Many thanks.....
