Pattern copies
Before working on a project I make a copy of the pattern and put the original away. Then when I'm stitching I keep track of stitches done by marking them with a pen on the copy. That way, I always have the original, unmarked copy of the pattern in case I want to use it again. Does anyone else do this or do you have another method?

I was recently very happy for this habit when my dog got into my project bag while I was gone and, among other things, tore my pattern up. She actually ate some of it. I made a new copy from the original, figured out where I was, and continued stitching. This is a trick that was taught to me by a close friend who first got me interested in cross stitch. Also, I now have a project bag with a zip top to keep the dog out and it's big enough to hold all the supplies I need.

Keeping the dog, cat, grandkids and great-grankids from staining, tearing up or eating my patterns has been a real effort for me. I have learned from experience, just as you have! I even keep my DH away. I am beginning to suspect that he might be feeding my stuff to the dog, who prefers floss to patterns.
Sadly, we live in the middle of nowhere and have to do a trip to town to the only place that we can get copies done. Some places do protect copyright, which I am a believer in, but I would never make, sell, give a copy to anyone. The law really does allow a working copy.
Hope you have solved your problem.

I take my patterns to a local printer and have them enlarged and copied. Some patterns have such tiny squares and having them made larger really helps. As I stitch, I fill in the squares with a red pen so I can always tell where I have stitched. The last copy on legal size paper cost me 17 cents so it isn't expensive either.

I mark mine too if the pic is black and white. If it's colored, I don't bother...lol

I make copies also. Ive done this for a long time. I keep my threads (snack bags with card number, color etc), scissors and other stuff in a rubbermaid container. The papers I keep in a clear front folder. I dont have to worry about pets getting into things.

I also have my own copy machine I can make copies on. Ive had that since I my Boy Scouting days. Ive only had to change the drum once. Its a Brother copy machine that they dont make that model any more. If you have one of the all in ones , copy, fax, printer you can make copies on that

Yes I make copies too. I buy most of my materials on line. When you figure the cost of petrol and parking it probably comes out to the same price as if you go to the shop.

I have no qualms about exchanging charts or making copies for friends but I would never take money for them. We exchange books etc why not charts! If I have a kit that I know I'll never use again I give it to a charity shop.

Here we can only buy a very small amount of cross stitching materials in hobby shops and there are now only two left in my city....such a pity.

I might add that I usually fill in what I have done with those see through markers and when you copy them the colours don't show up. I use a different colour for each section that I do in a day.

X, that idea about a differ highlighter each day is KILLER...I love it! Thank you! :)

But the only copies I make are the ones I enlarge...when I mark directly on a pattern--where are these folks getting color?--I use a see-through highlighter. Actually don't use anything else... but if whoever gets my patterns wants to stitch from them...good luck. :) My DD has taste for my stuff only for sentimental reasons. I doubt she will ever stitch them, but just in case, I use the see-through. :) Don't worry, I'm meticulous about not smearing the symbols. :)

Thank you for your replies. I guess I'm not unique in my use of pattern copies. I have an all-in-one printer so I can make my own copies.

When I put out my new project bag with the zipper my dog, Miah, looked it over, tried to stick her nose into it, gave me a disgusted look and walked away.

The only color patterns that I know of are those that come with stamped cross stitch, at least I haven't seen any others.

Well I suppose it's a good thing that Miah's taste didn't run to fabric and floss!

xstitcher, there was evidence that she'd "tasted" them, but apparently they weren't as good as the paper!

lol Connie. At any rate it shows that your Miah has gourmet tastes. My Westie's favourite tipple was the filthy birdbath.
