You could try using gradually lighter shades of floss. I'd go two shades lighter.

Me too, gran. :) Find a color family that you like and gradually, one shade at a time, go lighter. To be on the safe side I would do a little sample to see if you like it. Our mind's eye sees things differently than the outcome of the actual product. I'm struggling myself with something - these designers must think that we are psychic.
