I think you should consider what size hoop is comfortable for you to hold. I have all sizes...never use the 4" but 6 and 8" are my favourites. I find the larger ones too awkward and heavy.

Sorry I forgot to say that I vary from needle size 24 and 26. This would be for 14 count Aida or 28 count other fabrics. I use the smaller needle when having short stitches in various colours, it's easier to fasten your floss with a smaller needle.

If you are working with pillow cases you need to use an embroidery needle with a sharp point, not the tapestry needles which are for the cross stitch fabrics.
