A terrible customer service experience :( (NOT ECS!)
About a month ago I discovered a gift certificate for Mary Maxim that was about five years old - I don't really use them though my Mom used to get their catalogs all the time. I decided it was good timing - I had purchased a kit here from ECS to do an anniversary sampler for my parents 50th, and as it was a Dimensions kit - of course I ran out of two colours of floss, haha. So I needed those two skeins - looked up the colour conversion online - and ordered a bunch of other floss and various items to use up the certificate.

Now, the sampler is time sensitive, so I really should have just gone and bought the floss. But I live in a small town in rural Alberta Canada and have to drive into Calgary to get to a Michaels to do so. About an hour each way. I thought it'd be easier just to order, especially since when I phoned in my order (since it wouldn't take my gift certificate on the website) they promised it would arrive in 7 - 10 days. Faster than I would have time to drive into the city anyway.

When it still hadn't arrived, this past Tuesday I called them and because no one was around for customer service, I had to leave a message.

No one phoned me back so I called again today. Apparently they shipped my package to someone else, somewhere in Ontario. I had to use a CC for shipping, so did they get a receipt with my CC info on it? The person I talked to didn't know. Could they re-ship to me? The person I talked to didn't know, because apparently there is only one person who can do any of those things, and she wasn't around again. She won't be around again til Monday, at which point I can call and - maybe - get ahold of her if she's in this time. I was invited to leave her another message, which I did, but I'm not very hopeful that I'll hear back.

No apologies. No offers to make it right. Just "Well, I don't know how this happened."

Guess I'll be driving into the city this weekend! I leave two weeks from today (while their anniversary was in September, we are having a joint party in October because my husband's and my 15th anniversary is in November, so we are "meeting in the middle") to go see my parents for their 50th wedding anniversary and hopefully I'll have a gift for them!!! No thanks to Mary Maxim, though. I definitely WON'T be ordering from them again.

Everything I order from ECS, even coming across the Canadian border arrives quickly and correctly. I've been ordering from here since 2009 or so I think and am going to keep ordering from here from now on!!!

NOT NICE!!! I have lots and lots of floss. I would be happy to put a couple of skeins in an envelop and send them to you. I am even going to the post office tomorrow morning. Don't know how long it will take to get to you. I know that when I send letters to my aunt in Windsor it only takes about a week to get there. When I lived in Detroit, just across the river, it would take at least two weeks to get there!!!

Thank you maubennett :)

Nancye That is so incredibly kind of you :) I have talked my husband into going into the city with me tomorrow so we'll make a day of it - go to a movie and out to lunch and hit Michaels for those two skeins of floss. I just saw a post on here earlier today about being cautious because scammers ask for things online and I hope I didn't sound like I was doing that!! But I was so touched by your offer :) You are really a lovely soul.

What made me have to rant is that I have a tendency to cry when I'm angry, so my voicemail message for their customer service person was full of pauses as I choked up. I feel so silly but I can't help it. It makes me even more angry/frustrated and then I end up having to rant somewhere!

Driving two hours, lunch and a movie makes those two skeins of floss pretty expensive!!! (LOLOL)

I certainly did not think that you were begging for floss. If you are going to beg for floss beg for something more than two skeins of floss.
It is seven miles to the nearest Michaels. I think that is too far!. I have hundreds of full skeins of DMC and nine boxes of partial skeins. In spite of that. I ran low on #938 a few weeks ago. Since I had surgery and wasn't allowed to drive I did beg my son and daughter-in-law to stop at WalMart on their way to visit me and pick up a skein for. The nice thing was they also brought me flowers and a box of Eskimo Pies. Don't tell anyone, but I have not used that skein yet.

There is an Antique shop less than a mile away. I pass it several times a week. I recently found out that before we moved here that store used to be a Joann's. THAT WOULD HAVE BEEN DANAGEROUS.

Craftydivakat, much better to rant and vent here than on the phone--the person you need to rant to is unavailable and, probably would be just as unavailable in person! :) Sending all the negativity they dumped in your life into the internet void is empowering...plus you get all kinds of support & understanding from these folks...each of us has been there! :)

In passing, I'd like to say that the scammers aren't the ones talking about being short a bit of floss from a kit. I doubt anyone thinks that of you. You aren't a "lurker" that suddenly appears from nowhere asking for a freebie pattern, and then disappears, never to be heard from again. :) That scamper statement wasn't meant to accuse, only to suggest caution, because contact with a stranger, after all, is still dealing with a stranger. We get so comfortable in this chat room we forget that if we met someone on the street, we wouldn't dream of giving someone personal information... Stranger Danger isn't just for kids. :)

Unfortunately your example is another example of the down hill slide customer service is taking. ECS is one of the FEW websites that has an excellent customer service on-line and Off-line! That's one of the reasons that stores are losing business! They just don't get it!

mcleodjt - I hope you're right! (about her liking it :) ) I have now finished all the work with the two greens I needed. I have a little bit more to do and it'll be ready for framing, thank goodness.

Nanyce - It turned out to be more expensive than I thought! I wound up spending $50 at Michaels. But I am scrapbooking a vacation to Chicago and needed a few little things to round out the book and it got a little out of hand. That said, I don't think I get out of there very often any more without spending at least $50, regardless of my intentions.

I used to work at a Michaels in the states before we moved to Canada. I started as an associate, then eventually worked my way up a few other titles to assistant manager. I loved it so much and tried to know every product in the store. The store manager loved that I could answer questions about almost everything in pretty much any department, hah! It was because I spent so much money TRYING everything in the store!!! If I didn't get such a good discount I would have been paying money to work there.

Unfortunately we didn't get to see a movie though - they didn't have any tickets left for anything but the 10:10 pm show and not only did we have nothing to do for that many hours in the city but we didn't want to be driving home that late - oh well! We did get to go to our favourite Chinese restaurant though.

VCESS - You are very right. At least the venting helped me feel better, and maybe made someone else informed who might have thought of ordering from there. When I asked the person I did talk to on the phone what the company could do about the situation she told me, "Look, Lady, I'm not the person who took your order." I wasn't trying to rant at her, I just wanted an answer... but yep.

And thank you for the clarification on the scammers. Many years ago (around 2004 or so) I belonged to an online forum from the company Lush (all natural soaps/cosmetics). We used to run big group swaps on there and there were an awful lot of scammers who would join up then never send their half of the swap out. Once I was running one where everyone sent me ten things, all of a kind, and I separated them out and shipped them back out to people so everyone got ten things back. Well I was waiting on one person to send and I told everyone I would send once I received her stuff. A month went by after I was supposed to send everything out, and I was in constant contact with this person who kept insisting she had already sent it. Well one of the women in the swap got really angry and labeled me a scammer. I wound up putting tons of extras from myself in every package to make up for the person who didn't send and shipping everything out, but I was horrified. Now I think I'm oversensitive to that.

Bermuda - you are so right. My husband is the IT manager for the library system here with 39 libraries and sometimes he makes million dollar orders from computer companies and the service he gets is still awful! Doesn't matter what industry people don't know how to treat customers anymore.
