I am embarrassed
I realize now that what I saw as a "back arrow" is simply a symbol for another color.Talk about preconceptions.Your puzzled replies caused me to look again. Thanks.

Welcome to the club... I picked up pages 1-4 of my current pattern off the table, where I keep my "in process" patterns, chose page two to continue stitching and couldn't figure out why page two, where I had stopped stitching the day before, wasn't corresponding with the stitching area on the fabric.....after a few minutes I realized that I had page 2 of a different pattern.....

Oh man!! Glad to hear someone else has brain farts too. I'm working on a nine page project. I had packed it back up for our return trip from wintering in Florida, & just started working on it again. I couldn't figure why the black stitching didn't line up, & thought I was going to have to have the frog come visiting. Thank goodness he didn't stay except for one stitch. I realized that I had page 7 & 8 reversed! Once I put them where they belonged, the rows actually did line up correctly. And, I only had to redo one stitch! ( Which was the best part)
