im new
hi people. im new to this chitchat board. I asked a few questions concerning a specific piece i was interested in ( and ended up purchasing) and got some great responses. Im 45, quit my job last month for my mid life crisis i am currently in ( and im not so sure thats a joke- i did quit the job) I need some time to "find myself" and that requires stitching. And a amish rocking chair that i havent purchased yet, but soon. Real soon. so thats a little about me. Heres some questions on the piece i bought...."Merry Christmas Mailbox (mini)"

anyone done this piece? i have some fabric questions before i start. I love to stitch on Aida and not on Linen. I like the roughness of aida and dont use a hoop. just roll it in my hand as i work. the suggestion for the piece is 25 count Linen. How much of a finished difference ( and quality difference) would be seen if i used 18 count aida instead of 25 count linen? size also? And does anyone know why i hate linen? I think its because i like to see the bigger hole of the aida ( this is a vision issue for me as well as i like the roughness of aida. both are equally a issue for me) What are your thoughts on linen? do you think me switching the fabric from linen to aida will matter much? if im going to invest my time into this project, i want a good result and dont want to know 1/4 way into it that the (fabric)switch was a bad idea. I wont restart a piece in a situation like that. so i need to make all executive decisions before i start. I know my fellow stitchers understand where im coming from. Ideas? concerns? comments???

thanks guys

HI.... i never use anything but aida!!! it is a sight and speed issue for me... i am currently working with a cataract in my left eye and it is causing issues... i use aida 14 count... that translates into 24-25 linen.... take the size of the chart--- width and length stitch counts and divide the count of the fabric into the stitch count and you will come up with a close approximation of the size fabric you will need. add inches all around for finishing and that depends on what you plan on doing--- good luck! i also find it helpful to have a needle in every color floss bobbin i use.. saves time of threading and rethreading.. hope this helps

I enjoy using 18-count aida from time to time, but I mainly use linen and evenweaves because they're soft and come in better colors. I'm starting a big piece soon and using 20-count aida. I think the stiffness of aida will hold up better under all those stitches.

For your piece that calls for 25-count, find out if it's stitched over 1 or 2. Makes a difference!

Is this the Christmas Mailbox (mini) from Heaven and Earth Designs? If so, the design page on ECS (http://www.everythingcrossstitch.com/christmas-mailbox-mini-mrp-p35603.aspx?k2=e1) says 25 ct (over 2) for fabric. In Aida that would essentially be 12.5 count. So 18 ct would be a smaller finished product. Just divide the stitch count by 18 to get the size.

@cindy001, Hi, I'm a long-time stitcher, but fairly new to this group too. You will find that the folks here are happy to help when you have questions. I have never stitched on linen so I can't answer your question; I just wanted to say "welcome" and "happy stitching"!

This pattern is stitch over one on 25 count, not over two. I think there was a mistake made when they entered this on the website. So 18 count Aida would actually make the project larger, not smaller.

AGAIN...The ECS computer defaults to an "over 2" instruction. HEAE patterns usually are worked "over 1". So if it is a HEAE design, it will be " over 1". Troy has explained that for evenweaves the "norm" is worked over 2...HEAE being the exception. From the stitch counts I've seen of their stuff, if you worked over 2 you would result with works about the size of a throw rug. ☺

You should work on what you enjoy working on...if you have vision problems, a large project with tiny stitches could be more of a struggle than a pleasure. Unless you're looking for distraction and challenge...and sometimes, I do. I suggest you might be taking things a little seriously right now...I did the same...be easier in your decisions, you can do anything you want...including dumping it all. Changing your mind is the best and easiest gift to yourself. :) Consider your wellbeing, nothing else...this is for YOU. ☺

now i am confused. it said stitched over 2. ( that was a mistake??) so 18 ct aida would make it bigger??? I thought 18 count would make it smaller. Can someone explain this to me in "dumb people" terms??? :) reason i ask is because the chart came to me and its over several "pages" This will be the first time i do a project/chart that is on multiple pages. How large do we think this would be on 18ct aida?? I like 14 count aida personally because i like the size of the holes. I guess i really want to do this specific piece and will find a way. I just dont want it to not look like the end/finished picture because i switched to many variables out. ( fabric and size )

i see i am confused about aida vs linen. So if chart says 25 ct linen ,i wish to use the adia conversion to that. What would that be? And how much will i need? That basically will solve my problem. I didnt realize there was a Linen/aida conversion.

Hi Cindy,

The over two threads on the product listing is a mistake. Heaven and Earth chart all their designs for 25 count over one.
So 18 count is 18 squares per inch, 25 count is 25 squares per inch...so your finished picture will be larger on the 18 count. You will need a minimum of 20" x 24" of fabric for this design based on the stitch count of 255 x 352.
Your finished picture will be about 14" x 18".

Sorry for any confusion, I've never stitched an HAED pattern and am new to the website too. While the ECS website says over 2, the website for the designer says over 1 on 25ct fabric, so stitching on 18 ct would make it bigger. The HAED website says it's 255x325 stitches for the design (double check-your pattern will have this info) Which, if my math is right that means 14.2x18 for your stitched part on 18ct fabric with extra fabric on all sides for finishing. You can divide the stitch dimensions on a chart by your fabric count to get your inch size.

Just divide the stitch count by 18, that will give you the size of the stitched area in inches, (for stitching over one.) 14.17x18.06 would be the size of the stitched area. Just remember to add a few inches to each side!
I have a love hate relationship with linen. I love the look, and colors, but hate when holes, and threads are uneven.
