Aida vs. Linen
I am relatively new to cross stitch and have only stitched on aida. I would like to try using linen. Is linen much more difficult to stitch? The pattern says a 32. Any information would be appreciated. Thanks!

Hi,
Good to hear of someone new to counted cross stitch. AND you've come to the right place. THis chat-board has a lot of dedicated stitchers, men and women with a variety of years of experience.
If you have cross stitched on Aida, then doing higher count fabrics such as linens and evenweave fabrics is really not that much more different.
When you stitched on Aida, you stitched 'over one' square of the fabric, yes? Well, with linens-or evenweave fabrics such as Lugana or Jobelan- you can stitch 'over one' or 'over two' squares. First of all, your pattern says it is 32-count, does the pattern say 'over one' or 'over two'?
Stitching 'over two' squares on 32-count fabric would be the same as stitching 'over one' square on 16-count Aida fabric. Another example:
Stitching a pattern 'over two'' on 28-count fabric will give you the SAME FINISHED SIZE completed pattern as stitching 'over one' on 14-count Aida fabric.
Here are some suggestions on tutorials you might want to use as information resources:
1) Go to You-Tube and type in: "cross stitching on linen
and evenweave fabrics"
2) A resource I really like is on the 'scarletquince.com'
Website. They have wonderful tutorials and tips on

Thank you Bermuda. That was very helpful. I will definitely check out those sites. Oh, and thanks for the explaining over 2 to me. It makes sense when you look at the fabric. Happy stitching!

I find linen gives a nicer looking finish, but you have to have good eyes or good glasses and be well lit. The holes are smaller. I've done both but have found as I get older it's harder do it on linen.

For a first linen project, I would suggest using 28 count to get the hang of the rhythym. After that, you should be ready for anything--even 40 count!
