What is this vegetable called
I love these but have no idea of the name in North America. I can’t remember ever seeing them when I lived in Canada.

It's a turnip...haven't had one for years!

Yes, it is a turnip. It's an 'old' vegetable, just like parsnips & rutabagas. I remember, a couple of years ago, while checking out in a grocery store, the cashier asked me " just what is this thing" (a rutabaga). I love these three 'older type' vegetables! They are all good plain, or in soup!

Hmmmm. Now I’m really mixed up. This is what I’ve always called a turnip.

Mary, that one looks like a rutabaga to me. If you buy them from a store, they usually have a wax coating on them, to keep them from drying out. They are actually a cross between a turnip & a cabbage.

It's a turnip. We (I live in Newfoundland, Canada) cook them with other vegetables and salt beef or corned beef. Cook them in soup. Cook them alone as a side dish. Cut them in strips and bake them.....turnip fries...delicious!

Yeah Newfie, finally somebody that speaks my language! That’s exactly how they were prepared in my Ontario home. In the U.K. they are called swedes. Here in Denmark they are usually just used to feed to the farm animals, but young people are beginning to discover them.
Thanks to all for your time and answers. It’s been very informative. 🇺🇸 🇨🇦 🇩🇰

I call it a rutabaga, and use regularity in stews, or can just be boiled like a carrot and served with lots of butter. So healthy!!

Butter is delicious, but if it’s healthy you’re looking for leave it in the supermarket.

Mary, Ontario Canada agrees with your take on a turnip! Don't recall ever seeing the vegetable you first posted.🤔
