Supplies
I am new to this website and need to understand why some patterns appear to include the silk or thread and some like this one show an option to order the thread. Does this pattern come with the needed supplies (ie: thread)? If not, how do I determine the thread, color, amount I would need?

If it is a kit, then the supplies will be included. If there is a list of supplies to order, it is just a pattern or chart. you can order the thread when you order the pattern or get them on your own. I did notice that the one you have posted is out right now. If you order it you may have to wait for it. If you are like me, you would be impatient to get your order. Just a heads up.

It is my understanding that the list includes all the thread you will need. You have to supply fabric and needles. have fun! I am new too learning as I go.

Hi there. I ordered this kit last year. Unless the supplies list has changed, it is not complete. The purple colours in the skirt (actually blue, but still lovely) are a special type of silk. When you get the pattern, you will see this and you will have to go to the thread company's website to find out that they no longer make it, but they supply a substitute you can use that is generally available at yarn stores (but not at Michael's, at least not in Canada). You will also have to buy the gold thread at a yarn store as well as a beading needle if you do not have one. If you have never used beads in a cross stitch project before, there a number of good instructional videos on Youtube. This project is a challenge, but I am enjoying stitching it and it will be worth it when it is finished.

Sorry If I gave you wrong advice. I thought that a supply list on the product page would be complete.

I thought the list would be complete too. I bought the entire supply list for this project and was quite surprised when it arrived and I found I had to go out and purchase more thread. I don't think this is the case for most of the patterns here, but I do wish I had known for this particular one that I was going to have to find and purchase some special (and kind of expensive) thread.

Makes me feel a little better that I am not the only one.

I prefer to purchase the supplies required individually rather than as a kit. I have tried kits early on and found that the floss is just barely enough to complete the project. Much depends on your stitching technique, how many mistakes you make and how much use you get out of a particular strand before you snip it. I am not a fan of AIDA, it is to rough, most kits use AIDA cloth. When purchasing your supplies individually you can use floss that you already own. The reason a choice is given between regular floss and silk threads is because specialty threads are much more expensive, some cannot be washed upon completion, some stitchers do not like specialty threads, etc. Depending on the project, I have substituted DMC with very favorable results. When using specialty threads you usually have to complete each stitch individually to achieve the varigated appearance. That takes a little getting used to. Enjoy!
