Fabric needed
I have a pattern that the stitches are 310 long and 100 wide to make a pillow. I was trying to figure out the size fabric and it said with a 5" allowance and 14ct, I would need 32"w X 17" h. Does that seem right? Where do I get fabric that size?

I would double check your math before ordering. With those stitch dimensions, the pattern will have a size of 22.2 x 7.1 inches. You only need to add 5-6 inches total to width and length. You seemed to have added 5 inches to top, bottom, left, and right. So a 28 x 13 piece of fabric should work and give not quite 3 inches on all sides of pattern. Which is more than enough when I've made small ornamental pillows.

I agree about rechecking the calculations, but I think that there needs to be clarification- at least for me- when it comes to how you stated the stitch count in your post. I know, it doesn’t matter whether you say the word ‘long’ versus saying ‘high’ but it is just to keep everyone on the same path.
So, to me, you are saying you have a pattern that has a
Stitch count of 100 WIDE (I always put my stitch count measurements starting with ‘Width’ FIRST) by 310 HIGH
(I always use the word ‘HIGH’ , -not the word ‘Long’)SECOND. Everyone says ‘same difference’ but if you look at the MAJORITY of ‘Stitch counts’ listed on patterns, you’ll notice that the Stitch Count ‘Width’ (w) is printed first followed by the ‘Height’ (h). This continuity of width x height routine keeps me from making errors since many stitch calculators are set up in this format.
Which reminds me of a joke of two men: The first man, who owned a ladder, was putting his ladder up against a tree to climb up to cut down a tree branch. His neighbor, the second man, stood there looking at the ladder leaning up against the tree and said, “I wonder how High that ladder is?” The man that owned the ladder, proceeded to take the ladder, lay it down on the ground and start to measure the ladder from one end to the other end.
The second man said to the first man who was measuring, “No! I don’t want to know how WIDE the ladder is. I want to know how HIGH it is!”
So, I’m reading this as your pattern ‘stitch count’ is 100 Wide x 310 High, Yes?
If this is correct, I used a calculator on ‘crossstitch.com’ website under the ‘tools and Info’ heading and plugged in the information above regarding the width and height, the 14ct fabric going ‘over one’ with 5-inches extra fabric allowance for EACH side and came out with a completed “stitched area” will be: 7 1/4 inches WIDE x 22 1/4 inches HIGH.
It states you will need a piece of fabric that is:
17 1/4 inches WIDE x 32 1/4 inches HIGH.
ECS has 14 count aida to purchase the size you need, but I believe you would need to buy a larger piece of fabric to cover for the 32 1/4 inches you need for your project.
Since ECS is closed for the weekend, and I don’t know if they are closed Monday, for Martin Luther King holiday, you might want to try calling them on Monday at
1-800-800-8517 to see if they are open and go over fabric size calculations, and cost for your project. I am Not an ECS employee but one of the stitchers that saw your chat. Forgive my lengthy ‘chat’ but I get like this when I am arguing with Mr. Insomnia. :)

Doing the calculations I come out with a project that is 22.14 x 5.88 inches when finished. I always add 3 inches on each side when calculating my size of fabric I will need. Doing that I would use a piece of fabric 28 x 12 inches. If you contact ECS on Monday they can help you get the size of fabric that you need. they are very good with customer service.

Hope this helps.
