Hi,
If you add 3 inches to each side of the completed pattern size for mounting and framing, I would use a hoop size that gives you the maximum area to stitch on. Saying that, I would also make sure you have at least 1 1/2 -2 inches of fabric hanging from your hoop all the way around so your hoop has enough fabric to grip and keep the fabric taut.
Other experienced stitchers on this chat can give you their
Suggestions also so you’ll have more than one way to look at it and decide. :)

For large projects I personally use a 10" hoop, medium around a 7-8". I won't go larger than a 10" hoop - becomes too awkward to hold. It is all a matter of personal preference and what you are comfortable with. For a long time I used a 6" hoop no matter what the size of the project - just because it was one I had (matter of fact if was one of my mother's that she used for sometimes embroidery - never really got into it too much). Finally, I broke down and bought some larger ones, especially now that I multi-task with about 4 different projects going at once (so I can change around if I get a bit bored or frustrated with one).

For all my projects large and small I use a 7 inch plastic-metal tension hoop. For over 30 years I have done this and it is what works for me. Anything larger is too bulky and I don't care for the Q-Snaps. I have several of the tension hoops because they are getting harder to find nowadays. I do have a smaller version for any very small projects that I do.

The main thing to remember is to use the hoop you are most comfortable with and you will be fine.

Thank you for your help. I have never done one this size and trying to figure out how I feel comfortable

I usually use a size 6 or 8 hoop. If it has to go over the stitching so be it. I have NEVER had any damage done by a hoop. I use exclusively the brand "Pony" as I find it to be perfect. Any hoop marks that might occur on the fabric come out in the wash before finishing off.
I’ve tried the snap frames and scrunching but always returned to my hoops. I have other sizes but 6 and 8 are the ones I use the most. It's a very personal thing and none of the above mentioned ways are less better than the hoop. It’s what you’re comfortable with.

I totally agree with the other stitchers about the size of the hoop. I just bought a larger hoop and it is going straight in the netherworld. I tried but I find it hard to handle. I agree with Marydenmark. I have never had damage . I am just careful that when I have to move the material that I loosen the tension bar.
