Ants Ants Ants
Okay, last year I did battle those small sugar ants. And I won-kinda. Now (my son assures me they are not fire ants), I have red and black ants coming through the vent over the stove. Now the red ants are mingling with the sugar ants and I think war is about to break out! All those ants think they are winning the battle, but I swear THEY WON'T WIN THE WAR. All my food is always contained in Rubbermaid so I don't know what they are eating. Pam

Pam,
Try to find where they are coming into the house from the outside. Does the vent above your stove have a vent that is located on the outside of your house? If so, see if you see ants going in and out of the vent. If there isn’t any vent to the outside of the house, find where the vent leads to ie. Basement? Attic?
You have pets, don’t you?

I HATE bugs in the house! They don't pay rent so they don't belong - that is my logic and I am sticking with it!!! Good luck finding the source of the ants. They could be carpenter ants and those are horrible - they eat wood obviously. A landscaper once told me that ants hate charcoal (like the type you put in a grill), if you have a lot, put charcoal around the edges of your house and that might help.

Why ants, roaches, ticks, fleas, flies and spiders exist I don't know. Also, leeches and slugs. If I can get some Terro, I will. Am also going to get charcoal. Oh, and also huge water bugs on the list. I am sitting at my computer miles from the kitchen and an ant just walked on it like he was king of the world. The key word is "was". I know I always end with peace. But now I am at war!

Raid ant traps - they look like white, domed igloos always worked for us BUT you have to keep it away from food, kids and pets.
DH and I now spray the outside of our home with “Home Defense” targeting around outside vents, house foundation, windows, doors. It works but unfortunately it’s not Green and like any insecticides there are increases of health hazards to humans.
Just looked at home remedies to get rid of ants:
Ants don’t like cinnamon, peppermint oil (if you put some on cotton balls or rub on your kitchen vent maybe it will work); baking soda; vinegar
Let us know what works.

Wow, there is some great advice here! I am battling the tiny ants that don't seem to want to die even when I think I've squished them! I put little white ant traps in "safe" places. This has seemed to work but I love the charcoal and cinnamon and other home remedy ideas.

Are you absolutely sure there is nothing to attract them? Many years ago, when our girls were little we were suddenly inundated with ants...marching across the floors in military formation. We tried a lot of things to get rid of them but they always came back. Finally discovered that one of the girls was keeping unwrapped candy in one of her dresser drawers. Once the candy was removed, the ant armies left also. Also learned that during that summer, many of our neighbours were also overrun with these ants. Never had a problem like that again. Mary

The ant traps you placed already are probably attracting more ants. Once they get the poison back to the nest you should see the ants are gone. I can not stand ants in our house or wood roaches. We live on edge of woods and wood roaches look just like reg roaches, but they are bigger and fly! Exterminator told us that it was ok because they don't nest inside, but out in decayed wood. With all the dead ash trees I'm just waiting to see if we get bombarded this summer. YUK

When we moved to this house I noticed those little sidewalk ants. Go outside and look at your house - if you see cracks, caulk them. The ants like to enter the house through the plumbing lines our exterminator told me. Buy Terro gel and put in the corners of your windows and in corners of the bathroom. The ants can carry gel better than something solid and they will take it back to the nest and give to all their friends and the queen. The exterminator also told me that they like the moist garden areas around your house. We had new windows installed and had ants on the kitchen windowsill. I went outside and looked and they were marching in thru the little "seep" hole of the window. I don't do bugs or rodents!!!!

Ants and I seem to have a tumultuous relationship....
Probably my fault from watching the 1950’s movie, “Them” during the ‘Cold War’ era. 🐜

Don't want to offend anyone, but we refer to the tiny ants as "piss ants". Anyone else?
