You can easily soften the Aida by carefully handwashinng with a soap made for stitchery. I use Orvus paste, but there is also FabriCare and Quilters Soap. If you do a Google search, or use any search engine, you will find all the sites that sell these. They work very well on stains, are used with very lukewarm water to prevent shrinkng. I line dry to prevent shrinking also. The Aida will soften because washing remives the sizing from fabric...

This website does not carry Aida Country French fabric which is the soft Aida cloth. You can get it at the Stoney Creek website and the ABC Stitch Therapy website. It is 14ct. and comes in three sizes.

I soften regular Aida cloth when I stitch by washing it in my washing machine and adding fabric softener. I then air dry it on a pants hanger. This might help you out.

Thank you for all the suggestions. I love this message board. I don't know anyone that does counted cross stitch.

There you go again Miss Crossstitch! She isn't talking about any patterns. She is asking about fabric. Please read question correctly.
