Normally, 24 Tapestry, or Chenille, if you need a sharp point. Some prefer 26, as it's finer & leaves less hole space.

Remember too Jlhewes, the needle's purpose is to open the hole to allow the thread to pass through. If you're using 2 or more strands of floss on 14 count, a 24 is better....reduces the drag on the thread and it will stay smoother.

Interesting point, Miss Kitty. I've never heard of the needle having to open the hole but makes perfect sense. I lean towards smaller needles myself, they feel "right" somehow but will now use the appropriate size.
