basic questions
My sis-in-law gave me an unfinished 17 year old iris pattern cross stitch kit to finish. The mono canvas? is stiff which keeps stitch tension even. Does this kit have mono canvas? I will not use plastic which I've found on children's kits.

Although I knit, crochet and weave, I am unfamiliar with wording for cross stitching.

This kit comes with 14ct. white Aida fabric to do the stitching on. Also comes with cotton floss and easy instructions. Hope this helps.

If you are talking about the kit your sister gave you it sounds like it was a needlepoint kit. The project you have pictured is a counted cross stitch kit. There is a lot of difference between needlepoint fabric and cross stitch fabric. I have done both over the years.

Are you sure that it is cross-stitch? Maybe it is actually needlepoint.
