Decorating for Halloween...
Does anyone decorate for Halloween? Just kind of curious how many stitchers decorate with cross stitch projects. Do you decorate just in living room? Or do you go all-out? ie. kitchen, bathrooms, hallways, front door?

I love Halloween and it's probably my favorite to stitch but also holiday stitches in general. I have selected a stitching wall in my home and post everything stitched on it year round due to a lack of storage space. I just leave many of the spiders out of the Halloween designs and try and sub other motifs from the design to fill the empty space when possible since my husband does not like spiders in real life or in cross stitch, maybe he's concerned he would mistake it for a fake one when it's a real one lol,(I don't like them either but they're ok in stitched pieces). Luckily we have a great cat hunter in residence and any smart bug should look elsewhere for a residence if it wishes to survive. It should be interesting to see the replies from other stitchers to your post.

Yes, curious (nosy?) as to stitchers decorating for Halloween. That wall that you decorate must be great fun to look at! Oh, and I'm not a fan of spiders either, unless they are being cross stitched.
I did the "Something Wicked This Way Comes" chart for Halloween. It was fun, didn't take me long and looked pretty nice once I got it framed. I gave it 5 starts in my evaluation of the chart. Added an extra spider web of silver colored Kreinek thread to the top right corner of the design.

This is one of the best parts of counted cross stitch is that you often can tailor designs to how you want them. I have many Halloween designs since I like this holiday and its colors for stitching. I have tricky kitty by Imaginating (they carry it here). I set it up, it's all ready to go, my husband saw it with the big, fat spider, and this is when he confided that he did not like spiders in cross stitch. He'll have to overlook this one unless I can figure out how to change the spider to a grasshopper and I don't think I'm that good, lol.

Yes, I am one of THOSE people who LOVE Halloween! My beloved Ms. Hillary was a beautiful black cat with the softest nose and loving disposition who was the center and inspiration for a lot of decoration in the fall...all year, really. My house is decorated with witches, cats, spiders, and all things Halloween from mid September on. I have a rather elaborate get-up for myself, too. Kids that came to my door as little ones are bringing their little-ones.....love, love, love it. Of course, it's probably the Frankenstein my kids and I painted on a drop cloth 33 years ago that gives a hint they are welcome! :) I don't care if I rot every tooth in America, Halloween will be celebrated here!!!! With cackling and other corny stuff! :)

I do, a little. I have one cross stitched piece. That's about it besides pumpkins in the yard. I leave those until Thanksgiving is over. I loved Halloween because it was so low stress. No gifts to buy, just candy. I always let kids reach in to the container and pick what they want. DH is so cheap he angers me so. He gives one or two pieces per kid. Then we have tons of candy left over and I have beg my daughter to take it to her office. We hardly have kids coming by. I don't know why. I guess parents are too lazy to go out with their kids. Many people feel that it doesn't agree with their faith. My dinl is one of them. I let my kids "celebrate" whatever holiday they wanted, we are not faith bound, just good times. :)
I hang my little picture in the kitchen. I did a few really cute ones for my daughter. She has them in her entry during the season.
Nowadays, I'm just too lazy to get up when the door bell rings, that's why DH metes out the candy.
VCESS, you are doing an entire industry a huge favor by rotting every tooth in America. I am sure the dentists love generous givers such as ourselves. DH also asks older kids their age and says "aren't you a little old". I now firmly enforce the established rules. None of that stingy stuff. I dressed up as recently as 13 years ago!!!!! I think this year I will again. Have to buy a new costume, unless I can manage to stop sampling what I will be offering for upcoming Halloween event.

on the subject of no kids on Halloween.. we are seniors in our house 50 yrs.. there are some new young couples moving in the neighborhood.. newlyweds mostly. my block has 3 single guys & 4 newlywed couples..

we do not have anyone trick r treat any more.. I have been told by other people that parents take kids by car to other neighborhoods where there are more kids & lots of younger people who give out lots of candy..

2 yrs ago I stopped buying any candy and no longer "put on the light".. we would get 2/3 kids & than we had to eat the candy ourselves.. of course I only bought good stuff that we liked.. lol

Isn't that sad, dbye. That's what I did one year. I bought those little sample size candy bars - several bags. I LOVE Butterfingers. My daughter told me to mix it up because kids don't want those. So now I buy a huge bag of the "good stuff" and another large bag of "kid" candy from Costco.
I'll probably do this year and then it's lights out for the same reason that you mentioned. I don't like this car business. Last year a father hit a kid. I can't remember if it was his own for someone else's. I'd be reluctant to drive around on Halloween with all these kids running loose.
What will be next - Thanksgiving - to get the ax?

Texas Stitcher and Dbye-

I think Halloween has lost its appeal over the years for various reasons as Texas states and also those years with the candy scares didn't help and the safety issue to be out at night has also seemed to increase. When I was young, there were kids out everywhere trick or treating and dressed up, so much fun and great memories long gone. Of course, I live 8+ hours from where I grew up and having gone back there about 2 years ago, décor was still up for Halloween at a larger number of houses than where I live now, where there's absolutely zip and maybe just a few pumpkins (not even a jack o'lantern to be seen ): so sad. I really miss seeing the decorations and lighter atmosphere around these holidays. People's interests have shifted to other things it seems to account for the times.
