Stitching on Ann Cloth
I'm an experienced stitcher, but have never used Ann Cloth and want to try and stitch a small afghan. Does anyone have any pointers? I'm assuming I need to keep it VERY neat on the back side or do you line it? Where do I start? Just pick a square? Any advice is appreciated.

Hi,
I did a baby afghan once some years back. Can't remember if it was Anne Cloth but it did have the squares throughout the afghan.
You probably know this but I would look at what afghan patterns you would like and then preparation is everything!
When I did the baby afghan I bought a pattern for 6 little "cute" dragons. Then I planned on doing every other square and laid it out so no 2 dragons were alike in the adjoining blocks. THEN found the center of each dragon AND found the center of each afghan "block". I believe I started at the top squares and worked my way down. Yes, you have to keep the back looking neat and I DID use a hoop on each square I cross stitched a dragon on.
Of course you will need more floss since many afghans can be from 6, 8, 10 or possibly 14 or 16 count.
Hope this helps.

Thanks. That's basically where I was heading. It's 18 count, but looks a little bigger. Should I use 3 strands of floss?

Did you get the pattern yet? Is so, it should give you how many strands to use on 18 count.
If it does NOT say, I would try 3 or 4 strands first, try a few squares and see how good your coverage is.
Another thought is do what you're doing now....putting the question out there as to how many strands you should use. The other stitchers on this "chat" may have more knowledge than I do and can assist you a bit better maybe by having done 18 count.

Haven't decided on a pattern yet. Have so many books / magazines / downloads to choose from!! I'm thinking of using a series of flower patterns that I have with a flower in each square. I need to check the size.

Hi again Southern.
Just a suggestion, mind you. You might want to put a NEW "Chat" on this Message Board asking how many strands of floss other stitchers have used when working on an 18-count Afghan. You'll get answers.

I've worked on 18 ct linen and the pattern called for three strands of floss. I would use 4 strands. You'll get better coverage and most important you can use the loop method. That eliminates half of the weaving in of threads and makes the back look that much better. I suppose you could line it but I've never seen it done. My experience with stitched afghans is limited. I crocheted for my seven grandkids and various friends, etc. I'm done with that too. I only stitch now. Good luck and let us know what you decide.
