Antiques Roadshow program and counted cross stitching....
I watched an Antiques Roadshow episode about 5 years ago. There happened to be a young woman who had brought her great grandmother's cross stitch project to get an estimate as to what it was worth. I wish I could remember what the pattern was; I think it was a sampler.
Well, the dealer who examined the cross stitch project stated that if the young woman's great-grandmother had "added more information about herself, besides her name. This sampler would be worth much more because it tells the buyer more about the stitcher."
Have any of you heard of this regarding adding more information to a completed counted cross stitch project?

You can always type up a short description of the stitcher to glue to the back of the frame. I print it on acid-free paper. I like to state who taught me to stitch, how ling I have been stitching counted cross stitch (since 1952), and what I enjoy stitching. I also had my career and whybI stitched the project (especially if it is a gift, it is nice for the recipient to know why you chose the design).

I found that it ius usually just a few sentences. I add a small area to the back with the name of the design, designer (if available), the name of the company, my name, the completion date. Not that anyone will care 100 years from now. It looks like this:
"Giving Thanks"
Designed by Diane Williams
Little House Needleworks
Stitched by Suzanne Pitt
Completed 04/15/2015

If you are going to the trouble of using acid-free paper, your ink and glue should be archival-grade, also. :)

They are.

Oh, I'm sure, Su Pitt! My comment was really for those not used to thinking "archival". :)

Bermuda, Thanks for your post. I have never thought about this. I have given away cross stitch projects over the years and have attached a self stick "gift" card on the back in which you just fill in your name and the date you gave it as a gift. I was watching Antiques Roadshow a few weeks ago and a man brought in a cross stitched item which his wife had asked him to bring. The picture itself was not in great condition, but what blew everybody away was that the frame was some sort of hand carved frame that was worth thousands of dollars. This man almost fell over. He couldn't wait to call his wife and tell her. They all thought the cross stitched picture was what was of value. It had been sitting on the floor of one of their upstairs bedroom closets for eons. I have never heard of anyone adding more information although for the length of time it takes to complete a nice design, I can certainly understand that it would add to the value!

P.S. When I first began stitching, I used to place my name or initials somewhere near the bottom of the design along with the year, but for some things that I completed, I thought it looked out of place.

VCESS, Good to hear from you. How are you doing? Better, I hope. You can see that you haven't missed a thing. We are still up to our same old shenanigans!!!

Su Pitt, what a great idea. I once was a faithful watcher of the Antiques Roadshow but keep forgetting to tune to PBS. I watched an episode several months ago and a sampler was valued at $35,000, I believe. Adding provenance in many cases adds to the value. I did not know it was the case with cross stitch work. See, only goes to show how valuable our hobby can be.

VCESS, so glad to have you back! I hope that everything went well. It must have you haven't lost your sense of humor. I was thinking the same thing as you. Hmmm, once I gain more proficiency.....LOL
