ridge Lines
I have been following the discussion of ridge lines. I think I understand what you are describing. I have been working on a large black and white huskie pattern. It is in 4 sections. The pattern stated to do
1,2
3, 4. I am about 1/3 done with section 1. I think I can see what is going to happen with a ridge line. My question is, should I go back and do 3 or 4 stitch of section 2 to eliminate the line and then continue
that way? Will that fix the problem? I really value your advice. Linda

Hi LINDA,
You can TRY what you suggested to see if it will work.
My question is: The 1/3 part of PAGE 1 that you have already completed, are all the ROWS OF COMPLETED stitches you've done END exactly at the RIGHT hand side of the pattern
If so, you'll probably get a "ridge line" in that section when you start the upper 1/3 of the 2nd page.

If it were me, I would fix this one-third section NOW before you go any further. It may take you a little more work, but if you are putting that much time an energy into this pattern, then fix the area.

I WOULD DO THIS to prevent a "ridge' line:

For EACH ROW of stitches you have already completed that end on the right side, I would take out anywhere from 4 - 14 stitches OUT per row, bury this floss under the stitches as though you were ending that row of stitching. FOR EXAMPLE:

x - completed stitches
- = NOT completed stitches

Row 1: xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx ----- (5 stitches NOT done):I took out 5 completed stitches
Row 2: xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx ---------- (10 stitches not done): I took out 10 completed stitches
Row 3: xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx--- (3 stitches not done) : I took out 3 completed stitches
Row 4: xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx------------- (13 stitches not done) " "
Row 5: xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx---- (4 stitches not done) " "

Do you see what I mean?
ALSO: LOOK and see if the SAME Floss color extends from the right edge of Page 1 INTO Page 2..
Example: Row 1 (first page) I did NOT do 5 stitches of floss color 370) and see that Row 1 on PAGE 2
has 10 stitches of color 370. SO I will do FIFTEEN stitches of 370 (5 stitches that completes Row 1 on page 1 but I KEEP Stitching 10 MORE stitches of color 370 that carries me into page 2.
THAT WAY you will avoid any "ridge" lines.
Does this help? I understand it may be extra work but I'm a believer of "stitch in time saves 9" and I would not risk having ANY kind of a ridge line EITHER HORIZONTALLY OR VERTICALLY.

REMEMBER, You can cause a "ridge" line if you END your stitches EXACTLY at the BOTTOM OF PAGE 1 because you did not overlap your stitches from the BOTTOM of page 1 through the TOP of PAGE 3!!!
I hope this helps!
Let us know how this works out!!

I, personally, would not undertake such a project but am giving my opinion anyway.

First - I think that some ridging will disappear when the project is finished and washed.

I am guessing that there is are quite a few colors of floss being used due to shading. I would not pull out the stitches already done. Go forward from here and extend your stitches to the next block when the pattern calls for it. That small of an area probably would not be noticeable.

Dear Bermuda and Nancy, thank you for answering. You are right, there are MANY color changes. Sometimes one color per stitch. I am going to look at the 2nd and page and see if any of the colors follow through. I think you re right, Bermuda. I better go back and do some ripping. :(. this project is gift for a good friend, and would hate for it to turn out badly. Thanks for your advice. I am on this site frequently and know you know what you're doing!

Bermuda - let me know how you like Claire's in Vermilion - and the chocolate shop next door.
Where are you originally from in this area? I am originally from Sandusky. Linda

Llnda,

My DH and I just migrated for the summer up to the Sandusky area. I will let you know what I think of Claire's. Feel free to ask any questions because NANCYE G., SYAGEL, and MANY MORE STITCHERS on this messageboard are VERY VERY HELPFUL when it comes to giving advice and assistance with your cross stitching projects. There are MANY EXPERIENCED cross stitchers on this "chat."
They have helped me greatly when I need assistance regarding different type of fabrics, needles, floss.
and everyone shares their "OOPS" situations to help others avoid making the same mistakes!
The stitchers like to enjoy (in a NICE Way) of being supportive of each other through their situations and projects. So don't be a stranger!

When I am doing projects of several pages I always make sure that I do a few stitches into the next page. that helps so that I don't have ridge lines. I try not to end any stitches all lines up so that a ridge appears. You just have to be alert to this when sewing.

Now to show how even experienced stitcher can "screw up:. Yesterday I spent 2 hours "frogging" a bunch of stitches on the Laverne and Shirley pattern I am doing. The one color they suggested to use for the left bear just did not look good at all. So I ripped them all out and substituted a different color of floss. fun, fun fun!!

Bermuda, Thank you for your very descriptive explanation. I printed it out to save for one of my bigger projects. I appreciate the help.
