Beginner
As a beginner in crosstitch is this stocking too advanced for me?

I don't want to discourage a beginner.... I'd love to see you succeed and grow strong. However, yes, this is a harder one. Additionally, these kits aren't always stocked well, and many people have run short of the threads. If you have a shop nearby, go there! Get to know the people at your LNS (sorry: Local Needlework Shop) and take classes. Start with small items and DMC thread. I'd love to teach you! But I live in NoCo. One of our group is relatively new to needlework, and we all take turns helping her...it's great to see her knowledge and confidence grow!

Holler back! I could suggest some fun projects to get you started.

I would not recommend this for a beginner.

The pattern has 1/2 stitches and includes some metallic thread.

Consider what your sewing skills are. Would you be able to put the stocking together yourself?

Definitely recommend a simple starter project. Something with only a few colors.

I have to agree with the other ladies. This is definitely not a project for a beginner especially if you run out of floss like some people have with kits. This would be a good project after you have done a few simpler ones first. Don't forget that you have to then sew the stitching with some backing to make the stocking.

I think it is too hard. That's not to say that you couldn't do it. It just may take longer and discourage you. My first one was a big project but not quite so hard. I have done several projects. I still consider myself a beginner and I have done 4 Christmas stocking kind of like that one and they each took me about a year a piece. I love them and glad that I did them but now I am doing short flip its to see some accomplishments before taking on another big project seeing as I have 3 unfinished ones sitting at home to do.

Lisa, I agree with the other stitchers. We don't want to discourage you, however, we do believe it would be better for you to do something simpler to start. You can search this website and find things for "beginners" to make. Now....having said all of that....I would encourage you to buy this kit and put it away to make in the future. That way, you will have more stitching "under your belt" and when you do approach the kit at that time, I feel you will be much more confident. Please come back and let us know what you decide to do. We love to hear from "new" folks!!

I also agree with the other ladies in that it is a very ambitious project for a beginner. I would also recommend that you use white or off white fabric. I've stitched on dark fabrics (not black or navy) and it requires more skill that lighter colors. Dimensions provides a certain amount of floss and if you make mistakes and have to rip it out then it could easily happen that you run out of floss. Their floss and DMC are not an exact match. Select a pattern and purchase the floss and fabric separately. The assembly of a stocking isn't all that difficult if you possess basic sewing skills. Maybe you know someone who will assemble it for you.
Good luck and let us know what you decide.
