Lugana or Linen?
I'm going to stitch a new project on a 32 ct fabric. I need to decide between Lugana and Belfast Linen, but I've never used either. Some of the fabric will show when I'm done. Any suggestions?

Hi,
just looked up the difference between Lugana (which is an evenweave) and Belfast linen.
From my understanding of what I read, the threads that make up Belfast linen are NOT of equal size, therefore your background may have more of a "slubbed" rustic look to it. Lugana is an evenweave fabric where the threads are of the same thickness both vertically and horizontally giving a more smother background look. Lugana is heavier and similar to working with Jobelan. I do almost all my projects on Jobelan because I like the soft smooth evenweave look to it, but that is my own personal preference. I do like the Belfast when looking at wanting a more rustic look...again only my opinion.
Ask yourself, "How do I want the background to look on this project?" Hope this helps...

It does help. Thanks. Don't laugh at me, but I'm getting the 32 ct in black. :) I have to get black given the nature of the picture -- sunset silhouette. I generally wouldn't choose the rustic look for a scenic picture, but perhaps it won't look quite as rustic since it's black?

Hi Treasure,
I'm not laughing at you! :) You are not alone!!! :) I've done projects in 28-count BLACK jobelan and loved how it turned out. One my completed black background projects was an angel blowing a trumpet by Mar-bek Designs. I still work with the black jobelan fabric because it has the depth of black that I like and, of course, the softness and that it's an evenweave helps me. I use a light stand with magnifier for my work.

Haha! Yes, I'm expecting the finished work to look gorgeous on the black fabric but I expect the work to be quite tedious!!

Thanks again for your help with the fabric. I'm probably going to get the Lugana, because at the very least, if I'm going to work on such a high count (IN BLACK!!), then I want it to be a true evenweave.

Just a suggestion, though you may already know this. With the fabric being black, it is easier to see the holes if you put a white sheet or white towel on your lap which should help you see the holes better. One of the other stitchers suggested having a light shine up towards the back of your fabric so you can see the holes better from the top, especially on 32 count..

That's very helpful. I'll remember that for when I get started.
