Skipping stitches
How many stitches do you allow yourself to skip over? I never did more than two in any direction until I read on the Scarlet Quince site that you can skip three. I tried that when I was working the SQ pattern, but now I'm not so sure about it. I've gone back to just two. I'm a little more lenient with back stitch, though.

I also don't run my floss under fewer than five stitches. SQ says half an inch. I should measure mine.

I skip up to about 10 stitches, but my project is stitched solid so that it won't show on the front. If you have single stitches out in space a dark thread can show thru a light fabric is stretched across too far. Don't knock yourself out over hard and fast rules. Everyone does whatever works for them and looks good for their particular project. I have found on here that whatever you do, there is usually someone else that does it the same way. Rather comforting!

Depends on how tight the weave and color of floss...I'm working on a bright linen that I'm having to watch EVERYTHING! It's a kit and I should probably have ordered a better quality linen, but the color was so charming and I don't have any linen experience to speak of...LIVE AND LEARN! LOL

My skipping varies, depending on the pattern, the material, and the color of the thread--so it doesn't show through. As I've learned from this blog, there are no cross stitch police, just good ideas and suggestions, which you can folllow or do what you wish. The most important rule though is: stitching it for your own personal enjoyment.

Was advised when carrying thread on the backside any distance, carried at an angle rather than straight across (or up or down) it will be less visible on the front of your work, especially if it's a lone stitch. Was good advice. There is a difference in visibility.

Like most others, how far I run the thread depends, but it's a really good idea to run thru the back of several stitches if traveling any distance.

If carrying over 2+, weave under other stitches to maintain tension. If the carry over will be stitched over, don't worry about it.
