Centering
I used to know, but have long forgotten how to center a name on a line!
The line is 40 spaces/stitches and the name is 26 stitches........how do I figure out where to start the first stitch of the first letter?

Thank you,
Marlene

First of all you should write it on a piece of paper. Then count them, then put every letter on a sheet with squares and count them again. Then divide the number in 2 then from there you can start it. Good luck as you do how to type on the computer you can do that too. Good luck

you said the no of the letters are 26 divide that in 2 = 13 then you start from the 13 letter and put it in the middle and then you do the other side from the left or right then what left is 14 divide that in 2 you end up with 7 in each side. Have fun.

Marlene, dear! You first can subtract the number of letter stitches and spaces (26) from the number of available spaces (40), like so:
40
-26
=14
Then divide that by 2 because you want it in the middle of the space.
You should get 7.
Go in 7 spaces to start the first stitch of the first letter.

That's how I do it. I just write this down so I don't forget.

What if yiu do the subtraction and the number you get is not divisible by two. I just decide where I want an extra space. If it is a two word name, I put it in between the two names. Otherwise,n I just leave it at the end. Just my preference. No muss, no fuss, no confusion. And, for this kid, simple math...

SU -- that is basically what I do. Except I start stitching the letters in the center

However, sometimes I goof up. Last night I stitched a phrase under my dreidel project. I counted the letters and spaces more than one time. I was upset when it turned out a little lopsided. I counted the stitched spaces and sure enough I had miscounted by three spaces. Should have started one more space to the left.

The piece is now pinned to my bulletin board while I think about if I want to do about it. I could take the phrase out and stitch again. If I do that, I can add another space in between words. That will make the finish more balanced. I'm thinking that it is probably bothering me than the person who it will be given to.

Now back to stitching.

I still remember that because I had made a wedding picture for my daughter for her home and I added her name and her husband name. That what triggered the steps in my mind.

Well, I showed my project to my hubby. He's a perfectionist. (Always, points out that I put a fork in the spoon slot.) Asked him if he notice anything wrong with the stitching. Had to point it out to him. Guess that means I don't have to rip out this stitching. However, I am not showing it to any of you because you know that it is there.

Hi Mrs Nancy

For me to put the forks in the same slot as the spoons it is ok because my drawer is full of kitchen utensils I just have to look carefully for what I need. Have a good shabbat

Thanks for the help, Ladies!! I did Mrs. Pitt's suggestion! Well, actually, my husband gave me this exact same formula!! This s the JESUS LOVES ME that you gave me! It's turning out very nicely!! Nice to have a simple design I can manage while on heavy narcotics for pain!

On another rather sad note: my son messaged me that they lost the baby after all, no heartbeat. Not exactly sure how far along she was........maybe 12 weeks? Due date was April 4th.

I still plan on stitching them a birth sampler, like the one I posted, after JESUS LOVES ME so it will be ready for when they DO have a baby!!

So sorry to hear the sad news. I went through that heartache three times. It was difficult especially since my friends were having healthy babies.
