If you are close to a Hobby Lobby, Michaels, JoAnn Fabrics, or even a Wal-Mart, you can go through their buttons, or even jewelry making departments. I found some real cute flip flop & sunglasses buttons last winter (for a Glendon Place pattern) at a Wal-Mart in Florida. They don't have to come from a cross stitch supplier. Just an idea for you.
When I use beads, I stick with Mill Hill though.
