Picture of chart griding
I think it speaks for itself. It excellent when working with lots of similar shading.

Good Idea!

I'm glad that you could understand what I meant. I've only been doing it for a week.

Mary, you are making great progress. Almost finished!

I also mark my completed sections or I'd get hopelessly lost. How wonderful that we can make copies at home these days. The enlargement feature also helps.

Now I understand! I couldn't figure out what was meant by "gridding", it all seemed so complicated to me. I'm going to start gridding all my patterns, it looks like it would make it so much easier. I guess in my case a picture is worth a thousand words.

This is "chart gridding"...not the gridding of the fabric that involves blocking the fabric in blocks of ten. I do fabric gridding because it is the counting and color changes that get me lost on the fabric. I need the fabric blocked so I can ensure the placement on the fabric. I mark the finished stitches on the pattern also... my start and stop is quicker. Can't help it, I'm worse every day looking for easier, non-confusing ways to do anything. And quicker. :)

Ah the joys of being a Senior eh VCESS! I find that I can't remember how many stitches and spaces etc as I used to be able to. Even with the paper griding I still have to check quite often. My projects are now easy so I don't grid my fabric. Never mind we get there in the end and how we arrive isn't important. Also my multi tasking skills seem to be diminishing. Ah well...............

I'm sure that you will find it a great help. If you read VCEE's post she has come with some additional good ideas.

I just finished a stocking and don't want to see leaves or the color green for a while now. I kept making careless mistakes and had to frog several rows. I used overdyes and the shop sold me the last skeins of the colors I needed so I had to be really careful and not engage in my usual wasteful ways. I frogged very carefully and reused the floss. It's something I really don't like doing. In any case, the holly leaves are completed without mistakes and I only have two strands of Juniper green left over!

I have to stitch one more and then that's it. Different motif. The woman sold me such a small piece of fabric, well actually two, that I am forever counting and measuring to make sure I don't run out. I like a little extra fabric just in case. DD will have to the assembly, hence the rush to get it done. She is always under time pressure and it's almost March. December will be here before we know it. LOLOL Seriously, the older I get the more quickly time passes. It's crazy.

Wow, that was quick Tex. I take it there isn't so much green in the next one.

I'm still drowning in green but the end of the trees is now in sight. Today was mostly frogging because I was a bit tired after a hearty training. I've even had green dreams.

No, Mary, white instead. I'm wondering if I should use DMC or overdyes. If I use overdyes then I have to get my order organized. It's not the pattern I wanted but ECS doesn't have it in stock. That's another reason that I'm holding off. I'm hoping that they'll get it.

White is worse than green.
