How much embroidery floss?
I notice on the order page for Dogwood Lace that it gives the thread color under supplies. Quantity 1. One what? How much thread is that? How much should I order to complete the pattern?

The one is just a skein of floss. It is 8.7 yards in each color by week Dye.

Here is the answers to your question. According to the designer this pattern takes 10 skeins of Weeks Dye Works floss to do this project. Each skein is only 5 yards NOT 8.7 like Miss Crossstitch told you. The model is stitched on 32 ct. Cream Cashel Linen and finishes at 11 1/2 inches x 11 1/2 inches. The instruction booklet is 10 pages long. When deciding what size fabric to purchase don't forget to add 3 inches per side for the size you need. Hope this helps. It is a very pretty project.

Designers & their expensive materials! This would look lovely on 32- ct Lugana with a DMC red. There are many. One suggestion is 3830, on the brownish side. 498 & 816 are also nice reds.

50 yds. Of Weeks (10 skeins of 5 yds. each) 50 yds ÷ 8.7 yd. Skeins (DMC) = 6 skeins.

A conversion chart at Stitchesnthings.com. says "Baked Apple" = DMC 221. It's another dark red & would work. The advantage of Weeks is the floss is slightly varigated, or overdyed, giving a colonial look.

Hi jlhewes

If you say that you can do the dogwood lace with 6 skeins of DMC But I want to know how many strands for 14 count Aida? Many thanks for an answer. I like the design for a cushion.

Miss C, I have done 14-ct with 2 strands. It's a matter of taste. Do test squares on the edge of about 4x4 stitches. Also, buy a couple of extra skeins of floss for insurance. 14-ct will take more, as you know.

Jlhewes I agree with you I usually use 2 strands of floss when stitching on 14ct. Aida cloth. Sometimes I have used 3, but depends on how it looks. I really like this pattern but I have so many to work on now. LOL

If you like the look of Week's over-dyed thread, but you want to stick with DMC, you might check out either DMC's variegated thread [#115 would work], or try DMC's Variations line; from what I've seen, it has a more subtle variegation.
A word about the variegated thread: the variegation is very regular, and it repeats in a specific number of inches [sorry, don't remember how many...] To use it most effectively, find the repeat, and then cut all your thread lengths the same

I agree with dlarmstrong. If you don't complete the line with the strands you have on your needle, make sure you start with the new strand from the end that you cut from so the stitches flow and not choppy from stopping with a light color and beginning back with the dark color (or vice versa). I used the variegated on my last project (Universe Dragon) and caught myself mindlessly stitching and had to rip out and start back with that in mind.

I absolutely love this pattern. I will put it on my wishlist for the future. I bet it would be lovely in blue as well.
