Stretch it a little to relax it. Use short lengths (10"). Tie it to the needle with a loop knot.

In the past, I have used a coordinating color along with it. Blending filament is hard to work with, so using a regular strand, just one, will help with the stretching. If you use one strand of floss, it's not very noticeable. I've done this many times, and the outcome is very much the same. Also, use shorter lengths.

I agree with JHewes and I also use thread conditioner. This helps it slide in the holes a lot better. I stitch maybe 5 or 6 stitches and let it unravel. This keeps it from knotting up. Go very slow. I use my fingers on the opposite hand to hold the thread from the opposite side as I'm pulling it through the hole. This keeps it from knotting up also.

It's worth the trouble and turns out beautifully. You won't regret it.
