A black and white symbol pattern only uses black and white for the symbols. it does not use colors for the different symbols. This is cheaper to make for the companies that sell the patterns. Be sure that you make a copy of your pattern to mark on and make notes. That way your original pattern is clean and usable if you want to do it again. For the really large projects I do sometimes I make 2 copies of it.

It will be printed with a grid, like graph paper. Each square on the grid contains a symbol for a stitch in a color indicated on the color chart. Often the grid line is thicker every 10 squares to help counting & keeping your place. The instructions will also tell you how many fabric threads a square represents, usually 2 up x 2 wide.
