Red Bellied Woodpecker
Stitchers, Here he is in all his splendor! I received this kit as a Christmas gift. You may be asking "Are you sure this isn't a Red Headed woodpecker?" Nope...they are black with white on their wings!! We have a pair of these living in our back yard. They are big. They are also very gentle in nature. They don't mind if we walk around the yard 10-15 feet away from them, they won't fly away. I leave suet out for them to eat. Just like children, they like the peanut butter ones the best! The longest any one of these has lived in North America (that we know of) is 12 years.

Beautiful! I'd love to do this picture.

We have these same woodpeckers in my yard eating suet. They are called red-bellied woodpeckers, but I can never see where it is red on their belly other than on their head. Also the male has more red on the head than the female. But I know what you mean, a red headed woodpecker has a completely red head and its body is mostly black with some white on the wings. I used to have a pair, but haven't seen any in years. They both are beautiful birds. I love cross stitching birds!

arottenbucher, My husband ordered this kit from the Stitchery. A couple of things: It is by a group called Vervaco, it is from Belgium. It gives you instructions to do vertical stitching in order to have enough thread. It is DMC thread. They don't give you the numbers, however, I easily matched them with my DMC Color Card in case I ran into problems. Nice picture, doesn't take a lot of time. The actual picture size is 8.4" x 10.8", so it does have a "presence"!

The colors of this woodpecker are absolutely gorgeous. So vibrant. I have a backyard full of birds all summer long and spend hours sitting on my sunporch just watching them. They are like children sometimes with their squabbles. Beautiful work and thank you for sharing. I love seeing what other stitchers are making.

Had a woodpecker "doing his thing" on a palm tree 2 houses down from us. He was at it all day! You would think it would give him a headache. Anyway, never caught sight of him and after about 3 days of knocking, he stopped.
Awaiting the arrival of "Bullett" and "Small One" to return to our backyard and start taking nourishment from the hummingbird feeders....

Stitchers, Thank you for all of your kind reviews! I must admit that it was fun to make something "small". Most of my projects seem to be big these days!

Bermuda: About that woodpecker drilling. Most likely he is drilling out a nest site. I was just reading about the habits of these guys. They will drill out two sites for nests...and the lady of the house gets to decide which one they will use! The other reason they drill, although not a day a time....is to cause a tree to form sap from the damage they have done drilling. Sap attracts insects which in turn make a wonderful snack for the bird!! Mother nature is really something!
