I use a magnet. I tape my pattern to a metal board and use magnets to mark the spot. You can buy the set at the fabric store but the metal board is pretty small. 8x10 I think

hobbies, I always work a table, which a lot of folks don't!! I use a magnet board sitting up on a tri-pod that I bought at Staples Office Supply. I block off 10 x 20 stitch blocks with post it notes on my pattern. This way, I am not looking at the "entire pattern" each time I sit down to stitch. I then use a strip of rubber (magnetic) to move down the rows as I fill in my stitches. If I am using a color that I know will "spill over" into the next set of rows, I move the post it notes and continue with the stitches. I pencil off the blocks with an X when I have completed everything. If I have beadwork to do later...I put a check mark in the lower right hand of the blocks. Then when I come back and bead, I put the X after I am completely finished. Helps keep me organized!!

I make a copy of whatever I'm working on and use a yellow highlighter to mark rows as I go. If my chance I have to rip a little, I go back and highlight the area in green/blue/pink so I know what I've done.

I have to have pattern & stitching at same level. I use a scroll frame with a folded copy held on with magnets.

I got a very large magnet board from this site, I think. It holds even big patterns, as it is 12" x 18". I use it to hold the pattern on a music stand next to my chair. Then, if needed, I use either erasable highlighters called Frixion from amazon.com or colored pencils which are erasable as well. They might leave a shadow of color, but that is not a big concern, as I seldom repeat doing patterns, unless a friend wants me to do so.
Most of the time, I don't need a line magnet to folow the graph, but did use one long ago. I have been stitching for over 60 years so now, I don't get into a lot of trouble unless floss symbols are closely alike. THAT irritates me a great deal!

I use the extra large clip board from the office supply store to clip my copy of the pattern on. I tried the magnetic board and didn't like it so gave it to my friend. I makes copies just like the others and mark them with a mechanical pencil as I stitch. If I have to rip out a section I just go back and erase the line I marked through that part. My sewing area is my chair in front of the TV. On my left is my 7 drawer chest with my supplies. On my right is my end table with the table light that I prop my clip board against and behind me is my fluorescent floor lamp to light up the area. This is my "stitching heaven". LOL

I also make a copy and use a highlighter. That way I can fold my project up and take it with me wherever I go. I always carry a project with me in my car, so if I have 10 or 15 minute pockets of time I work on my project.

U can use floss to mark the spot or use a xstitch ruler to count where u need to be. These use to help me.

I make a copy (or two) of the pattern I'm going to do before I start so I can use a highlighter to mark what has been done. If you tend to get lost as to where you last stitched, try putting the needle there when you are done for the day.
