Stitching backwards
Has anyone here tried working a chart upside down? The counting would be much easier, but I don't know if there would be a visible nap.

I often work bottom up, if bottom has the better starting point. 180° looks the same. Don't try 90°

I also start at the bottom sometimes -- or in the middle working down and then turning the pattern and fabric upside down.

Depends on the pattern. Last year I stitch something that was 140 x 140. The top ten rows were almost completely the same color The bottom had quite a few different colors. It was much easier to keep track of where I was stitching.

Phooey! I was going to try this just to see if I could tell a difference on the stuff I do....completely forgot. My question was about the direction of the stitch (and direction of the floss), even though the stitch is crossing the same, it would be backward. Overwhelmingly, the consensus was that I was full of "stuff". :) But I'm still doubtful till I can see for myself....of course, the detail I used to see, is not the detail I see these days! :) I still think that direction of floss thing could be an issue.....Yes, I know. :)

Do you mean starting your stitching at the lower edge or corner and working upward, or literally turning your pattern upside down? Sounds like you meant upside down...I'm wondering what the benefit would be to doing that?...and sometimes, even working with the chart upright, I've picked up my work and started working the chart sideways without realizing it. I was so embarrassed, even though I was by myself!

Lol, it's working out fine, I think. Turning 180° makes the stitch orientation the same, and since it's all one section, I don't think a different nap will be obvious. I'm working on L&L Angel of Grace. Her figure is slightly right of center, and her ribbon is off to the left. There's nowhere to anchor the stitches to the left. I turned her upside down and anchored the floss to the dress.

That's not really very coherent, is it.

The stitches are NOT the SAME! Draw it out on paper...they look OK, but they are upside down....floss going in opposite direction.

I agree...upside down is upside down and your stitches are not the same. Unless you stitch the whole project upside down. Then I guess it wouldn't matter, but why would you? No reason you can't count your way down to the bottom and work your way up, then you stitches will be the same. Turn the cloth upside down and your stitches are wrong.

jsimon -- that make perfect sense to me.

simon, I also am a fan of Lavender & Lace. I am now working on Celtic Spring for our grand daughter. There are portions of the design where I need to either apply stitches or beads off the main body of work. One of the things I love about this chat room is that I stumbled across a conversation a while back discussing how to anchor stitches that are away from the main body of some of the designs L&L produces. These nice folks put me on to something that I think would help you!!
Google: Scarlet Quince.com....
On their home page, click on solutions
You will see: Top questions - scroll down - Under cross stitch patterns & stitching - select #12 Tutorials.
Scroll down on the left side in red lettering - access "anchoring" - then select "Pin Head Stitching on linen or even weave". It will give you a process to anchor a stitch that is "out there by itself"! I have tried this and it works perfectly. They give you step by step pictures of how this is done. I hope this helps you....it sure did me!! Have a great fourth!
P.S. I just enlarged the picture you submitted.....it is just beautiful. I love the color you are placing the Angel on. Your stitching is perfect!!!! Carol

I had never heard of that pinhead anchoring. It looks VERY helpful, thank you! And thank you, Carol, I really like blue spruce for angels, even though I don't like the softness of Belfast. I started May 15 and it looks like I'll be finished within the week!

Other than that, I'm going to continue stitching upside down. I realize I'm stitching left to right instead of right to left, but since this section is completely unrelated to the rest of the piece, I think it will be OK.
