seeing how it is stiff any suggestions to keep edges from fraying?

I hem stitch, by hand, all around my fabric edge. I love doing the hem stitch; find it very relaxing for some reason. Besides cross stitching, I'm currently thinking of giving hardanger a try.

Also, I know you can zig-zag the edge of your material, but I'm too lazy to drag my sewing machine out of the closet to do a zig-zag around the edge. And my machine is not fancy enough to do more complicated stitching.

Hem stitching works fine for me.

If my sewing machine is on the table I will zig zag around the edges. Otherwise I use masking tape

I either zig-zag the edges or have my LNS serge the edges. I'd never use masking tape... leaves a residue. Painter's tape is better if that's the route you choose.

I have my serger tension set up for linen, so I just grab it out of the closet and over stitch the fabric. I personally think zig zag is better, fewer threads to catch, but my sewing machine is set up for straight stitch.

I used masking tape ages ago and it left my material sticky. I never thought about painters tape, but I bet that would work.

I have to look it up but I think the whip stitch is like the hem stitch, except you don't catch your thread before you move on to the next stitch--not explaining that well. But I have heard of using the whip stitch too.

I tried using masking tape once, never again. It leaves a sticky residue that's hard to remove. Now I use painter's tape which doesn't leave a sticky residue. The edges are stiff and sometimes the tape will work its way up. I just press it down again.

If my serger is handy, I'll serge the edges. As other stitchers have said, there's more than one method you can use.

U can use masking taps to stop all of your cross stitch fabric from fraying or use zigzag stitch on your sewing machine. Have fun.

I use two different ways. Sometimes I fold the edges over about 1/4 inch and baste it. Most of the time I use masking tape. After I wash my finished project in my washing machine I have never had any masking tape residue.
