Learning Cross Stitch
Is counted cross stitch hard to learn? I'm looking for something to do during he evening and have seen some very nice patterns here on the site, especially a lighthouse which is probably a bit ambitious. Suggestions appreciated.

Cross stitching is easy to learn. I taught myself 30 years ago. To start though get one on the beginner kits sold here on this ECS website. It will take you through the steps to learning how to do it. Start on small projects first and then work your way up to harder projects. If you don't start out easy and work your way up you will get frustrated and give up. Cross stitching is a great hobby so take your time. Welcome to this chat room. If you have any questions feel free to come here and several of us will be glad to help you.

Hi there.

If you like to learn how to cross stitch it is easy as 1-2-3. Just go on youtube.com they will show you all about it. Have fun and welcome to the ECS.

Welcome, jcb!!

As syagel and miss c have said, cross stitching is not hard at all. I concur with syagel that you should start small with a fairly simple kit. You'll definitely get the feel of how stitching is done. Then after that, the world is your oyster! Go for it! :)

It is not only easy, it feeds your soul. I got started by watching a friend making Christmas ornaments during our lunch hour at work...she enlisted all of us to help by bringing needles, fabric, floss & patterns in a basket. I was hooked...went by hobby lobby after picking up my daughter from practice...had to return that weekend to pick up a project for her!!! Many years ago, but I am a recent returnee.

If you don't have someone to show you and you find YouTube annoying, your local cross stitch shop (maybe a quilt shop) will be THRILLED to get you started properly. Also, the library is full of lovely, informative eye candy. Start small and simply, usually the more colors, the more complicated, but never be afraid to take on "more". Sources are varied but only a mouse-click away!

Welcome to our mania! :)

It's not really counted, which sounds scary. It's more relatiomal. The videos will show you how to start your 1st stitch. Then it's all which colors are next to this one? Which are 1 or 2 away? Where's the same color you have on your needle?

You never want to wander too far afield, or you will count wrong. The needlepointer can do the bunny on the far left of the painted canvas, but you have blank cloth to stitch on.

It IS a lot of fun. I've been stitching over 30 years.

Welcome aboard to the beautiful art of cross stitching.

A friend showed me how it is done; she was stitching a large autumn scene.

I have been stitching ever since (1985 when I started) . Very therapeutic for me, I love to see the design come to life. Never thought I would become so addictive. Housework not the priority like it use to be!!!!

I like Lizzie Kate ones to start out on, very colorful and fun to stitch.

Good luck and come on board with the rest of us stitchers!!!

Bye for now

I'm all for finding an LNS (Local Needlework Shop) and asking them to help you. It's not hard. Every one has their own methods, and some fibers require their own specific methods. Don't be afraid to try. For the beginner, Prairie Schooler and Lizzie Kate are good and cute designs. They may list overdyed flosses, but they always list DMC alternatives, which are much less expensive. Do not be afraid to try!!! We all.... every one of us!!!!... had to start somewhere! Some early in life, some later, some re-discovering our childhood. Just don't be afraid to ask! Welcome!!!
