Why not black fabric?
On this piece, is there a reason you recommend white fabric instead of going with black, as the background is decidedly black? Thx.

It should be black because the Jews light the candles in the evening and the background is in dark because the outside is dark so the room.

Hi,
I'm just guessing but I think that the concern for using all black fabric on this pattern is because the pattern has areas of white and off-white, such as the candle flames, which may cause the black fabric to be seen when the "flames" and lighter colors are stitched with the light flosees.
I would suggest that if you have a small piece of black fabric in your "stash", you cross stitch some white and near white floss on it and see if you don't get any "see-thru" by the black fabric.

No...You have suggested on your site using white fabric - why can't I order black fabric & cut down on the stitches for this project because the background will already be black????? I have done the parrots on black fabric & they have light colors on black which do not show through.

Cross stitch lends itself well to variation, so if you desire you can purchase the black fabric instead. ECS offers the convenient option of selecting the designer's suggested fabric along with the pattern and needed floss when purchasing this pattern. However, if you desire, you can simply add the pattern itself to your cart and then look through ECS's fabric selection for a black fabric that will suit your needs.

Hope that helps!

Jill -- probably the designer recommend the white fabric. Every square on this piece is stitched so t really doesn't matter what color the fabric is.

FYI -- the is a very great dreidles pattern on this site. I stitched it recently. Four little dreidles in a row. The Hebrew transliteration Neis Gadol Haya Sham is part of the pattern. I added the translation "A Great Miracle Happened There." I was very happy with the way t turned ut.

WOW -- this topic certainly generated a lot of conversation quickly.

Jill -- using black fabric and not stitching the background is an excellent idea.

Miss C -- you and I have had differences of opinion in the past. This time YOU ARE VERY WRONG. The reason that the background is so dark is because that is how the that is how an original photograph was taken

Yes, we light the candles in the evening.
Yes, it is dark in the evening.
NO NO NO it does not have to be done in a pitch dark room

Use black fabric if you desire, the white fabric suggestion is just that...only a suggestion.

I saw a design at a show stitched on white & also on black. The black was stunning & the little fabric show through heightened the drama. Stitch this on black & frame with a narrow gold and black frame. It will be stunning.

As Nancye said, skip stitching the background! But dosgigch table.
