sarajw1,
There are two ways you can start this project:

1st choice: Look at your pattern and see if you can find the 2 arrows (one on the side of the pattern, the other on the top or bottom of the pattern) where you follow these two arrows to the middle of the chart and begin your first cross stitches there. OR.....

2nd choice: Begin your first cross stitch in the upper left corner of the pattern: I do this only a very large patterns I'm going to stitch and even then, you have to check your math a few times to make sure you are starting the very first stitch in the exact space on the fabric or you can end up either running out of fabric or your pattern is off-center on the fabric. I JUST GOT DONE making the mistake of not figuring correctly, so now my pattern will be off-center on the fabric. Fortunately, I was able to have enough fabric to cut off the other side.
I would suggest you use the 1st choice by finding the middle of the pattern and stitching out from there. If you have NOT ordered your fabric yet, keep in mind to add 6 inches to your fabric width and 6 inches to your fabric height, if you want there to be 3 inches on EACH side of the completed pattern for room to mount and frame your completed project. Hope this helps! OOPS! As to what hoops you want to use, it is your choice of hoops or frames: I use plastic hoops and use the larger ones so I don't have to keep moving my hoop around on the fabric. For my BIG projects, I use "Q-Snaps" which are round, plastic pipes that have plastic holders that hold the fabric on; the hoops come in different sizes, ie. 6", 8" up to 17". They can be pricey to purchase -and from experience- the "generic" Q-Snaps I bought in the store did not do their job holding the fabric, so I stick to only buying the original "Q-Snaps".
I'm NOT an employee of Everything Cross Stitch, but one of the stitchers that does frequest this wonderful "chat messageboard".
