Last year I decided to try linen and I really love it. This small project would be a good one to start with if you do want to learn. Otherwise, you could use 14 or 16 count aida.

28 count linen or evenweave is the same as 14 count aida.

I'll bet that once you start using linen you'll be hooked. I certainly was.

You could try 25 or 28 ct Lugana. It's attractive and so easy to stitch on. It's an easy fabric for transitioning. :)
Let us know how you like it.

I used to use 14 Aida only, but once I tried 25 and 28 count Lugana and linen, I was hooked. It looks so nice once done. I still use Aida, because I have so much saved in my stash, but what I don't use, I have 3 other stitchers standing in line to take all of my stuff. They are always asking if I have certain colors or stitch count, and I usually do.
