A standard pattern calls for 2 strands for cross stitching and 1 strand for backstitching. That is what I generally follow but it is your own creation so you could use however many you like. Keep in mind I am just a fellow stitcher and not an employee of ECS.

So how many strands did you use? I'm thinking the instructions call for 2 strands because if 3 strands are used the butterfly might look too bulky. Please let me know how it came out, and would you recommend it.
I'm considering on making this for my daughter.

Thank you for your in put. I am just starting this project and probably will use just 2 strands as suggested. It is very detailed but I like a challenge.

That is beautiful. My sister loves butterflies and would love that. I better put it on my wishlist. Is it counted cross stitch or stamped?
