This is a solid cross-stitch piece, so the fabric color does not play a role. That being said, I think anything from a white to a creme color would work just fine, since there is quite a bit of white in the piece itself. I don't think the 18 count fabric will increase the look of the detail - the pieces I have down-sized just look smaller, and if anything the detail is lost to the eye because of the size.
