BB is this the type of afghan you are talking about? If so, can tell you what I did when I did mine back in 1473 (feels that long ago anyway). I just used a hoop large enough to cover whatever block I was working on. Good luck.

I did cross stitching on a baby quilt. I used a hoop. Have fun.

I have done four afghans for baby showers. Never used a hoop or frame on them, as the fabric is so soft. Just free handed them, & held the fabric taunt in my hand while stitching. I was afraid of a hoop or frame distorting the fabric.

I am working on my second afghan. I just use a hoop and then roll the excess = a hoop is all I use. Everyone has their preference. Remember, there are no cross stitch police. My name is Pam and I am a cross stitcher on this site. There are a lot of great stitchers on this site, ladies and gents. So this is a great place to get help. I hope you come back and share your work. Shalom. Pam

My younger daughter would crochet her afghan, then cross stitch a "Pooh" character on it. I was very impressed. She did it while she was pregnant with her first child. Her cousin saw it and begged her to make one for one of her kids. I don't remember if she used a hoop for the cross stitch, but I don't think she did. I was so impressed with her finished result. She put it in her hope chest to save for him when he became an adult, but sadly lost everything in a fire a few years later.
