I am very new to cross stitching. Can you tell me how to stitch the musical notes? Is this done like backstiches or long stitches?

Looks to me like it's a cross stitch and some backstitching. It looks like it should be fun to stitch. Enjoy!

Marym,
It is probably backstitching but check your directions, it should tell you what stitch to use.

Looking at the picture the notes are a single cross stitch and the remainder is back stitching. Since you are new to cross stitching may I offer a word of advice? As tempting as it may be to drag your thread to the next note and continue please don’t; the reason being is the thread will show through from the back especially black ( if you were using black material you could possibly get away with it). Only offer this because I have seen many new stitchers be disappointed when they see the show through. Happy stitching and welcome.

Kevans is right it looks like the notes are a cross stitch and the rest of the note is back stitched. My suggestion would be to cross stitch the note and then back stitch the stem of the note if you can, sometimes back stitching can be either one or two strands, depending on the pattern and your own preference. I would also suggest the loop stitch to do the single cross stitch it makes things easier. You tube has great videos that can help. Good luck and have fun but be careful because it can become an addiction...lol 😀

I echo what 113kevans mentioned about carrying your thread from stitch to stitch. I picked up this little kit on clearance. I got to looking at the image and think I'm not doing the individual x's. Seeing the pink thru to the front would drive me crazy.

I agree with the others, don’t cross over to other notes, the black will show through to the front.
Marzhare - I wouldn’t either. You could use the ‘pin stitch’ but you would be doing it ‘till the cows come home’.
This is exactly what I’m talking about! An excellent experienced stitcher deciding NOT to add a part of the pattern to HER creation and it is NOT being disrespectful!!!

Thank you to everyone for the advice. No, I try to not travel my thread, especially when dark colors. I did learn that lesson early on. It is very tempting to save time, but in the long run looks bad.

We hear ya! Like yourself, I’ve been there, done that with traveling the needle to the next - in my case- cross stitching a phrase...

MarzHare, how about using a pink bead with invisible thread? No show, good color. 😊

Great idea vcess. Thanks! I think the x's look cute and your suggestion is a wonderful one. I already have invisible thread that I use in quilting...
